Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other
kinds of health problems during this month. In the northeast and the middle west, it is very hot at some times and very
cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists that IQ of a group of students
was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% below. The wind can help
people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the
United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people's feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people.  They usually
feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in
hot summer. At about 180C, people become stronger.
Low air pressure may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops in low pressure days.
There is "good weather" for work and health. People feel best at a temperature of about 180C.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful or unhappy today? It may be the weather's problem.
1. _______________ can have a bad effect on health.
2. People may have more intelligence when _______________ comes.
3. Low air pressure may make people _______________.
4. In"good weather" of 180C,  people are _______________.
5. The writer wants to tell us that _______________.

Man has been to the moon.  It was been the first step to the future travels  in space. T he moon is much nearer to the earth than all the planets. Venus, the nearest planet to the earth is millions of kilometers away!
Traveling  to the planets will be  man's  next step.   It will be more difficult than traveling  to  the moon  and
certainly more exciting.
In 1997, an American spaceship reached Mars, the second nearest planet from the earth. A wonderful robot slowly  walked  on the planet and worked hard.   It sent a lot of information back to the earth.  The
most exciting piece was that there used to be a lot of water on Mars.  The American  scientists asked,  "Is
there any life on Mars?" Unluckily, no life was found there, but American scientists do not lose heart.
Russian spaceships have found that it is so hot on Venus that there must be no life there.
Spaceship  of  the future will  be bigger and 'faster.  They will be able to carry people for travels to the
moon or other planets.
Man may in  the  future find planets l ike the earth and make them home.   But there is still a long,  long
way to go. Man should learn to know that the earth will be his only home for a long time and begin to love and take good care of it.

Everywhere we look, there is the color.  We see it in the sky and in the sea, There is the color in rocks and in all plants and animals. The color makes our homes and schools pretty. We even see the color in our food. It makes things look good.
Everything we see has the color. We see green grass and red apples. How can we see colors? We see colors when light hits our eyes. Dogs and any other animals can't see colors. But bees can. They even see colors we don't see. This helps them find flowers to fly to.
We sometimes use the names of colors to say things. People may say "see red "when they are angry.
Or you may say you "feel blue". This means you are sad. We use colors to tell us things, too. Red means to stop. Green means to go.
Some people can't tell one color from another. They can see yellow and blue. But they can't tell red
from green. We say these people are color blind(色盲).

What do you do to relax? Do you watch TV? Do you read a book? Or do you listen to music? How
many of us actually play a musical instrument? How many of us go to concerts? How important is music
in our lives? What kind of music do we like?
The survey above shows the musical habits of a few of our readers. Interestingly, fourteen people
out of the twenty questioned actually play a musical instrument, while only six people don't. Out of these,
ten people practice their musical instrument between 0-3 hours a week and the other four between three
and six hours a week.
The best instrument to play is the guitar; eight people say it is their favourite instrument to play.
Another four people like playing the piano and two like playing the violin. Two people, however,
don't like playing the violin or the piano as they think they are too difficult.
Pop concerts are always popular but, in this survey only eight people say they like going to concerts,
six to pop concerts and two to jazz concerts.
A higher number, eighteen, say they like listening to music as they find it relaxing. Only two people
don't like listening to music at all. These results seem to suggest that we are more actively musical than
we think ...

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would
admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, "My
spoken English is poor." However, their spoken English does not have to remain "poor". I would like to
suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves because of a limited vocabulary.
Obviously, the better answer is to enlarge their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited
vocabulary, if your attitude is positive(积极的). Others will follow you as long as(只要) you use the
words that you know.
Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking
because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY
(流利性) NOT ACCURACY(准确性). Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for
grammar and using them to get your message across(使别人了解你的信息). But to talk to someone
in English, as quickly and well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense,
but it doesn't matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and forgive you for any
mistakes he hears.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears!
All the hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are somewhat passive language learners. Instead of actively looking
for opportunities(机会) to improve their spoken English, they passively wait for speaking opportunities
to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you are active language learners,
then, you will see English chances wherever you go.
If you do not use your English beyond the classroom, you will forget that English you know.
Remember: USE IT OR LOSE IT! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking Eng1ish
more.
