Electronic books have changed the way many people read for . Now online textbooks are changing the way some students learn and some teachers teach.

More than students go to the public schools in Fairfax County, Virginia, outside Washington. Last year, the school system used digital books in fifteen schools. This school year, middle schools and high schools changed printed to electronic textbooks in their social studies classes.

“I mean, it’s just a regular textbook, except it’s got it all online.” says Luke Rosa, a history teacher at Falls Church High School.

Peter Noonan, an assistant superintendent(主管) of schools says, “The world’s changing . And the online textbooks can change right along with the events that .”

“Digital books also cost than printed textbooks,” he says, “Usually it’s between fifty and seventy dollars a textbook for each student, which adds up to about eight million dollars for all of our students in Fairfax County. In fact, we have bought all of the online textbooks for our students for just under six million dollars.”

Social studies teacher Michael Bambara says the e-book he uses in his government class is better than a(an) textbook. It has materials for students different levels of reading skills…

Dear Sir or Madam,

Last Thursday, I traveled on the 8:00 a.m. train from Glasgow to London King’s Cross and I was quite angry with the service of your company.

The train didn’t come on time and it was forty minutes late when it left Glasgow. A man at the station said sorry to us, but he didn’t give us any reasons for the delay (误点) . We then had further delays on the way and had to wait another thirty minutes. As a result, I missed my plane from London to Frankfurt and had to wait for several hours.

What’s more, the service on the train was also very poor. The trip took more than five hours. Unluckily, we could buy nothing but some soft drinks on the train. Worst of all, something was wrong with the air conditioning (空调系统) and it got hotter and hotter in the train. Before we reached King’s Cross, the temperature was over 40°C.

Because of your poor service, I feel you should pay me compensation (赔偿).

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully

David Roberson

Mr father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and announced(宣布): “Get up, you’re going with me to cut the grass in the garden.”

The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and excited. From sunup to sundown, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden. By the end of the day I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got $ 6 for my work that day.

One day my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside. “Take away these leaves!” he said, “and don’t make me have to tell you to do it again.” The message was clear. Today I value(珍视) the importance of doing a job well the first time. It will never fail to impress(给……留下印象) the person you are working for.

After two years, my father told me and my brother that he felt we were old enough to cut the grass by ourselves. Every Saturday during my last two years of high school, we set off early in the morning with the same strong wish we had gained while working under our father.

Looking after the garden was neither exciting nor high paying, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and that whatever I was paid was more than I had before.

A newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. “If you’re only thinking about hard work and money, you probably don’t want to do any better than you are doing.” I answered. In every job, from cutting the grass to washing dishes, I’ve learned much. I’ve learned something that helps me in my next job.

If you work hard enough, you can learn from any job you do.
