     Good morning. The program today is about music. The word "music" comes from the   Greek word "muse".   The
Muses are the goddesses of the arts. Music is only one of the arts. It is like the spoken language, but is uses sounds.
Today's program brings together music from different corners of the world. Who invented music? Who sang the first
song? No one knows exactly the answers to these questions.    But we know that music plays an important part in
almost everyone's life. Babies and young children love to hear people singing to them.   When they are a little older,
they like to sing the songs they have heard.   When children go to school, their world of music grows. In the middle
grades students take music lessons. When they reach high school,they become interested in listening to pop music.

Music has meaning for everyone. It can make people happy or it can make them sad. In this program we shall study
the language of music.   We shall be trying to find out more about how music works.   We shall try to find out how

     A terrible mudslide (泥石流) swept through Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province
on August 7, 2010. Lots of people were killed and injured in the disaster (灾难), and some are still
missing. Now the new school semester began. How about the students there?
     Up till now, most people including teachers and students are still living in the tents. The students should
have started their new semester on August 15. However, the terrible mudslide disrupted the plan since
two schools were damaged and three others were used as resettlement areas (安置区). The new

     Typhoons (台风) in the northern part of the world have girls' names. Sometimes they have very
beautiful names. Rose is a pretty name but there was nothing pretty about Typhoon Rose. It was the
worst typhoon to hit Hong Kong in ten years.
     It began to rain in the morning of Monday, August 16th, 1971. At ten o'clook in the morning, Typhoon Rose was still 130 miles away but already the wind was blowing people's umbrella away. The wind
became stronger and stronger. The typhoon shelters ( 避风港) were soon full of boats. Ships that were
too big to go inside the shelters put down more anchors ( 锚). Some very big ships went out to sea. It is
safer for a big ship to be at sea in a typhoon because it cannot be blown onto rocks. Kai Tak Airport
