Peter is a sixth-grader at Woodland Primary School. He is only 12 years old but has been smoking for three years. John, 15, is a Junior 2 student at Woodland Secondary School. He began smoking four years ago. “Smoking is part of my life,” John said. Peter and John are not those boys’ real names. But their problem, smoking, is a very real problem. In many countries, smoking is becoming a bigger problem for young people. Most smokers start in their teens or earlier.

A study of 8,000 London students shows that smoking is a problem for many British kids. More than 21% of middle school students and 6 % of primary school pupils said they smoked.

“If young people start smoking early, it will be very hard for them to give up later on,” said a professor.

Every year, about four million people die because of smoking. And if people keep smoking, that number will go up to about ten million a year by 2030, the World Health Organization (WHO) says. So we have to learn and tell others about the dangers of smoking.

Only a few years ago, mobile phones were very large. They needed large batteries. They had to be powerful to send their signal to faraway places. This was because most cities had only one antenna tower(中继站) for mobile phones.

Today’s mobile phones are small and easy to use. Now most cities have a lot of antenna towers, not just one. This means that each mobile phone doesn’t have to send its signal far away, so they don’t need to be so powerful. Mobile phones today use small batteries. A large city, where lots of mobile phones are used, can have hundreds of towers.

We can use a mobile phone to do a lot of things, like calling your friends and family from almost anywhere, calling the police immediately if there is an accident, sending or receiving messages. Some modern mobile phones can be even used to play games, take photos, listen to music, watch TV, surf on the Internet and so on.

Sending short written messages is a popular way to use your mobile phone. Many people use short forms of words, so the messages are quick to write and read. Can you guess what these messages mean? RUOK? CUL8r! That’s EZ! That’s Gr8! Can I C U B4 3pm 2moro? Try to read them out. What do you hear?

I have been a friend of Bill Gates for a long time. I knew him when he was a student at Harvard University. We were surprised when he left University to set up his own company “Microsoft” and make his own software. But he was the clever one! He is very good at writing computer languages and almost all computers now use Microsoft software. The program “Word” is used from Britain to China!

Of course he has made a lot of money and that makes people very jealous. They want to stop his success. Even the government is against him and has tried to break his company into two parts. The government says that it is unfair to other people who want to sell similar software. And what's more, because he fits his new software free in every new computer, the government says he is stopping other companies from selling their programs. This is not fair. Everyone should be able to do what they can to make their company bigger and stronger. Bill Gates has only done what he can to stop other competitors.

He is very rich, but he is generous. He has given millions of dollars to help the education and health of many children around the world. You could not meet a better man than Bill Gates.
