Dear Eric:
Linda and I have been best friends since we were six years old. We often study and play together. It’s great! But she often gets unhappy when I get better grades than her –she really gets jealous. Should I keep taking her as my friend?
Yours,
Alice
Hi Alice,
I think friendship is important in our lives. You should talk to your friend. Tell her you’re both studying and it’s common that sometimes you get a better grade and sometimes she does better. Tell her you’re going to compete(比赛) with her and try to beat her in every test . maybe you can tell her that if she beats you, you’ll buy her some chocolate or something like that. If you can make your schoolwork into a game, you’ll both win in the long run (从长远看), and you will both start to get better grades in your subjects. If it’s a game, you’ll both enjoy school a lot more, and you’ll still be best friends.
Your,
Eric

If you live in the United States, the law(法律) says you can’t have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer vacations you can work 40 hours each week. Does that mean if you are younger than 14, you can’t make your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can make money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, often makes money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Lana , 13, makes money by knitting(织)sweaters for dogs and selling them to her neighbors, and Lisa said she had started taking art classes and showing her works to people. People have asked her draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 12, writes articles for different magazines!
Making money is learning. By working to make your own money, you are learning the skills you need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology(技术) and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning(挣) it. However, when you make your own money, you don’t have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better than the twenty dollars you ask for.

Alicia was a young woman who liked to exercise for her health. In fact, she walked five kilometers before        every morning, and went swimming once a week at the swimming pool. She didn't smoke and never          . She didn't eat chocolate. She didn't eat sweet and fatty food,       . She weighted herself every day.
One day Alicia was on her daily walk when she saw a        sitting in a rocking chair under a tree. He looked very old and his hair was white. He looked thin and weak, and his hands were shaking,       he looked very happy.
He smiled at her and said," Good morning! Lovely day ,isn't it?"
He had a wide smile        his face, and his eyes shone with happiness. But Alicia saw that he did not have teeth.
"Good morning! "replied Alicia. "Yes, it is a lovely day. "
Alicia thought he        very old and wise. She thought he must be at least 90 years old! She decided to ask him about the         of a happy old age.
"I hope you don't         me asking, "she said, "but what is your secret for being so happy at your age? I hope I can look as happy as you do      I am your age. "
The man in the rocking chair said, "My secret for        ? I smoke twenty packets of cigarettes every week, and drink three bottles of wine every day. I eat hamburgers and chocolates whenever I want. I never eat vegetables. I never walk anywhere and I never play sports. I sit at home every day. "  "
Alicia was         . She didn't expect the man to give her an answer like that. She wondered how the man got to be so old when he did        wrong. She thought he should be         and unhappy. Perhaps she was wrong. Maybe ,she thought, people could live a long happy life       eating well or doing lots of exercise.
"How old are you ?” she asked.

Lots of kids hate school, a new study found. Usually this kind of feeling doesn’t last long. But what happens if you feel this way too much? School is a fact of life and getting a good education can help you build the kind of future life you want. So let’s talk about school and what to do when you don’t like it.
If you don’t like school, the first step is to find out why. You might not like school because you don’ have enough friends, or maybe you don’t get along with your teacher. Sometime it’s a big problem with your classes and school-work. You may be getting farther and farther behind, and it may seem like you’ll never catch up.
When you know why you don’t like school, you can start taking steps to make things better. It’s a good idea to talk to someone about your problems with school. Your mum, dad, teacher or school counselor(顾问) will be able to help you. Another good idea is to write down your feelings about school in a notebook. It’s a great way to let out emotions(情绪). Remember, you don’t have to share what you've written with others.
