I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat writing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world. Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. But the desk.she'd said again, is for Elizabeth. I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me, she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. They never happened. And gulf opened between us. I was too emotional. But she lived on the surface.

As years passed and I had my own family, I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me. I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came. My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and finally peace-it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it. and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not. Now the present of her desk told me that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some paper inside-a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times. Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

If you look down at our planet from outer space, most of what you see is water. In fact, oceans and seas cover more than 70 per cent of the planet's surface. Millions of years ago, there were no oceans on the earth. The surface of the earth was very hot, so water boiled away. As the earth cooled down, steam in the air began to fall down as rain. It rained and rained for many thousands of years and made the first seas on the earth.

Oceans are a large and wonderful world full of strange and interesting animals and plants. More than 275,000 kinds of fish and other animals live in the ocean. Most of them live in the surface waters because there is enough food there. But there are also some unique animals in the deepest part of the ocean. Some animals live their whole life in the ocean (such as whales) and others can spend time in the ocean or on land (such as sea lions). They are very important to our life.

Believe it or not, half of the oxygen(氧气)we breathe is produced by algae(藻类), the oldest plants on the earth! Each year we eat about 29 million tons of fish, much more than cattle, sheep and eggs. Without the oceans, we cannot live!

The oceans are also rich in minerals(矿物), oil and natural gas and many other resources. Every natural element can be found in the ocean. About 3.5 per cent of ocean water is made up of salt which we eat every day. Nearly one-third of the world's oil comes from our oceans. In fact, there is a lot of gold in ocean water, too. If all the gold in the world's seawater were mined(提炼), each person on the earth could have about four kilograms of gold!

There are different manners in different countries. We should know their customs so that they will not think us ill-mannered(不礼貌的). Here are some examples of what a person with a good education does or does not do.

If you visit a Chinese family, you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you should not enter until the host says,Come in, please. After you enter the room, you should not sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is put on a tea table before you or given to you, you should say Thank you. You should take it with two hands, not one hand, or they will think you are ill-mannered.

Before entering a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house, a visitor never finishes the food on the table. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In England, a visitor always finishes the drink and the food to show that he has enjoyed it. This will make the host pleased.
