Once there was a man who had two children, a boy and a girl. The boy was good-looking but the girl was not. One day they found a mirror and for the first time they saw what they looked like. The boy was very pleased and he said to his sister, “How handsome I am! I look much nicer than you!” The girl did not like what her brother said and gave him a hard push. “Go away!” she said. Their father saw what was happening. He went up to them and said to the boy, “you must always be good as well look good.” Then to the girl he said, “My dear, if you help everyone and do your best to please(使人愉快), everyone will love you. It will not matter that you are not as good-looking as your brother.”

I have always heard that walking under a ladder brings bad luck, but I’ve never thought so. I have walked under ladders many times, but I have never met anything bad before. It’s the dame with black cats. People say if a black cat crosses before you, it means bad luck. I have never thought that until this afternoon. But ever since I heard my student Sam’s story, I’ve begun thinking about whether it was true.

This afternoon, Sam was walking down the street thinking about something, so he wasn’t paying attention to where he was going. He walked right under a ladder standing against a building. A black cat ran out of a door just at that moment, and Sam fell over it, his head hit the ladder. A man washing the window was at the top of that ladder and the dirty water went down through the air. Poor Sam! He got wet all over.

Jim Green has been in China for more than two years. He has been to many interesting places in Beijing, but he has not yet been to many other parts of China. Last week he went to Mount Emei in Sichuan Province with his family.

Many people like to travel by air, but Jim's family think that travelling by train is the best. It is much cheaper and far more enjoyable than a rushed trip by air. They had a wonderful train ride to Chengdu before they went on to Mount Emei by bus.

Early one morning, they took a taxi to Beijing West Railway Station. The station was very lively. There were bookshops, food shops and stores selling all kinds of things. Mrs. Green bought some fruit, food and bottles of water to take on the train. She said that it was better to get some food before they got on the train because food on the train was usually too expensive.

The train was quite comfortable, and there weren't too many people in their sleeping car. The Greens could stand up and walk around. It was a long journey, but none of them felt tired. They kept watching the beautiful scenery out of the window. They walked, laughed and played cards. The conductor kept coming to offer them hot water and selling them magazines. People nearby talked with each other. A young man practiced speaking English with Mr. Green. Jim thought the train was like a big moving party. He went to sleep quite late. He listened to the click of the rails and then fell fast asleep.

When Jim woke up the next morning, the train was already near Chengdu. His train ride seemed really short, but his memory of the pleasant trip will last long.

Do you have a pet? Have you seen a hamster? Do you like to keep a pet hamster?

I have a very cute hamster named Barter. Barter has a dark cream-colored body (米色的身体), and a short tail. He has four tiny feet with sharp claws (尖尖的指甲)and tiny long teeth. He also has a pocketon each side of his mouth, for storing food.

Barter loves food. His favorite is corn (玉米). If I give him a bowl of corn, he will eat every bit in a few hours.

Barter is quite lovely. He's just over six months old and loves to play. He plays in the hamster wheel every night. When he plays around, he runs here and there, his body looking like a ball of fur(绒毛)rolling about (滚动). He gets very upset if someone bothers (打搅)him.

I like my little pet Barter very much. He's brought me so many laughs and joys.

Today, the largest remaining area of hutongs in Beijing is on the north of the Forbidden City, in the area around the Drum Tower, the Bell Tower and Hou Hai. There is where many Chinese and foreign tourists come for a “hutong tour”. We asked several of these tourists to tell us about their impressions.

  (Vicky Wang, Hong Kong

“It’s really strange—we’re in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the world, but in these hutongs it feels as if we’re in a village in the countryside. There are lots of trees everywhere, and all the buildings are only one or two storeys high. Also, there aren’t many cars in the hutongs, so they are quite quiet—very different from the streets in the centre of Hong Kong! It’s nice to stroll around here and stop for a drink in one of the little cafes or bars by the lakes.”

  (Ted Watson, Canada

“When you visit the modern parts of Beijing-with the wide roads, tall, concrete and glass buildings, and neon lights(霓虹灯), you can imagine that you are almost anywhere in the world. It’s the old hutongs, temples and palaces that are really interesting and beautiful. It’s a shame that so little of the old city remains. I’ve taken lots of photographs while I’ve been here. The next time I come back here, I don’t know how much of old Beijing will be left.”

  (Yu Lou, Shanghai

“I don’t see what’s so interesting about these hutongs. The streets are too narrowI couldn’t drive my Mercedes down them. And most of the houses are old and dirty. China should have a modern capital city that we can all be proud of. Let’s get rid of these hutongs and replace them with modern offices and flats! ”
