lt's on the house
One day I went to a restaurant to sing karaoke with an American friend of mine. There is a rule in the restaurant that customers have to order dinner or drinks there. Therefore, we ordered drinks that day.
After we sang for quite a while, all the others at the same table with me got the bills of their own that the waitress gave them except me. Then I pepped(偷看) at the bill of my friend, but his bill did not include(包括) my charges (收费), Just then the waitress passed by, and I called her but she didn't hear me and still went straight ahead.
Then my friend said with a smile, “It's on the house.” I opened my eyes wide and wondered why he mentioned house to me since I asked for my bill, that had nothing to do with the bill completely.
Later, my friends explained that“on the house” meant free of charge, that is to say, the owner of the house would pay the bill.
Nobody on earth could eat free lunch, So, I paid my bill, too.
