One day a Japanese went to London. He didn't know English at all. When he got to London, he took a bus to a hotel.

The next day, he decided to visit some places. When he walked along the street, suddenly he remembered that he didn't know the name of the street. Then he looked at wall. He saw some English words and copied them down in his notebook. He though could get back to the hotel easily because he knew the name of the street now.

He walked for a long time. Then he felt tired and he wanted to go back to the hotel. He took out his notebook and showed the words to a young woman. The young woman read them but she did not know what he wanted.

Then the Japanese stopped an old man and asked for his help, but the old man could not understand him, either.

Not many years ago, some farmers were worried because hawks(鹰) were taking many of their chickens. They didn't know what to do. Then they decided to kill the hawks.

They killed many hawks. Soon they didn't have to worry about their chickens. But they now had a new worry. Field mice(田鼠) were eating up many of their crops.

  Why?

Hawks eat not only chickens but also field mice. They eat more field mice than chickens. But the farmers didn't know this. When they killed lots of hawks, they changed the balance of nature(生态平衡).

When people move into a new place, they often pull out many wild plants. Many of these plants are food for the animals. If the animals cannot find enough plants to eat, they will die or have to leave the place.

In the United States, for example, the deer there like to eat a kind of wild flower. The tigers there eat the deer. The number of deer, tigers and flowers doesn't change much if people do nothing to them.

But people killed many tigers because they wanted to protect(保护) the deer. Soon there were so many deer that they ate up all the flowers. Then the deer began to eat the leaves of young trees. These trees were important to the farmers. So they found out ways to protect their trees. Now the deer had nothing to eat, and many of them died.

It is important for us to keep the balance of nature.

Eating habits(习惯) change from one country to another. Not only(不但) can the food people eat change, but also(而且) the way they eat can also change.

The Chinese have a saying: Eat good things for breakfast; eat a big meal for lunch until you are full; but eat less at dinner. Many Americans agree that one should start the day with a good breakfast, but their ideas about lunch and dinner are different.

Lunchtime is over quick in the United States. Most Americans only give themselves time for a quick lunch before they go back to work or school. So they eat a small lunch. After work they think they will have more time to eat a big dinner. Also a quiet dinner at home with all the family talking about their day is a way to take a good rest after a long, hard day of work.

Eating at a restaurant(饭店) is also different. In China, people like to talk and laugh when they are eating. Very often you can hear people talking or singing loudly and they are just having a good time. In America, it is not like this. They want a quiet place where they can eat a good meal far away from the sounds of the outside world. If someone is talking too loudly, other people in the restaurant will look at him or her angrily. If some people are talking too loudly, the manager(经理) might come out and ask them to be quiet. The manager may even ask them to leave the restaurant.
