　　When you turn on the TV, you can see lots of ads on it．Some of them tell us what is the best and cheapest．But some of them about children are the opposite．

　　Most ads of eating and drinking tell children to imitate what the children do on TV．So they don’t like to eat healthy foods like rice and vegetables．These foods are very important for their growth．

　　Some doctors say to parents that letting their children drink too much Coca Cola and soft drinks is not helpful．

　　In Canada and the United States, People enjoy entertaining(请客)at home．They often invite friends over for a meal, a party, or just for coffee and conversation．

　　Here are the kinds of things people say when they invite someone to their home：

　　“Would you like to come over for dinner Saturday night?”

　　“Hey, we’re having a party on Friday．Can you come?”

　　To reply to an invitation, either say thank you and accept, or say you’re sorry and give an excuse：

　　“Thanks, I’d love to．What time would you like me to come?” or “Oh, sorry, I’ve tickets for a movie．”

　　Sometimes, however, people use expressions that sound like invitations but which are not real invitations．For example：

　　“Please come over for a drink sometime．”

　　“Why not get together for a party sometime?”

　　“Why don’t you come over and see us sometime soon?”

　　They are really just polite ways of ending a conversation．They are not real invitations because they don’t mention a specific(确定的)time or date．They just show that the person is trying to be friendly．To reply expressions like these, people just say “Sure, that would be great!” or “OK．Yes, thanks．”

　　So next time when you hear what sounds like an invitation, listen carefully．Is it a real invitaion or is the person just being friendly?

　　William Shakespeare was a writer of plays and poems．Some of his most famous plays are Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth．He wrote thirty seven plays in all．They are still popular today．

　　He was born in 1564 in England．At school he liked watching plays．He decided to be an actor when he finished school at the age of fourteen．In 1582,he married a farmer’s daughter．She was eight years older than he was．Their first child was a daughter．Later they had twins．In 1585，Shakespeare left his hometown，Stratford upon Avon．His wife and children stayed behind．No one knows why he left or what he did between 1585 and 1592．

　　At twenty eight he moved to London and joined a theatre company which opened the Globe Theatre in 1599．He became an actor，and he also wrote plays．He usually acted in his own plays．He earned almost no money from his writting．But he made a lot of money from acting．With the money he bought a large house in his hometown．

　　At the age of forty nine, Shakespeare retired(退休)and went to live in Stratford upon Avon．He died at the age of fifty two．He left his money to his family．He left his genius to the world．You still see his plays in English and in many other languages．He is one of the most famous writers in the world．

　　A Frenchman was once traveling in England．He could not speak English at all．One day he went into a restaurant and sat down at a table．When the waitress came he opened his mouth, put his fingers into it and took them out again．The waitress soon brought him a cup of tea．The man moved his head from side to side．The waitress understood him and took away the tea．In a moment, she brought a cup of coffee and put it on the table．The man again moved his head from side to side．He moved his head from side to side whenever the waitress brought him something to drink．She brought him a lot of different drinks, but drinks are not food, of course．

　　When the man was going away, another man came in．This man saw the waitress, and put his hand on the stomach．That was enough．In a few minutes, there was a large plate of meat and vegetables on the table in front of him．

　　So, you see, we can’t understand the language of signs so well as the language of words．
