Mattie and Millie were two very old sisters. They lived at number 5 in our road. Mattie, 87, worked in the garden because she enjoyed that kind of work. Millie, 85, cleaned the house and cooked the meals.

One day Millie heard a sudden cry from the garden. Then her sister called out:“Millie, Millie! Come quickly!” Millie ran outside, “Why? What happened to you?” She asked. Mattie was on the ground, under an old apple tree.

“I think I've broken my leg,” Mattie said:“I can't get up. Help me, please.”

  “How did it happen?”

“Well, I wanted to get those big apples from the top of the tree. So I climbed up. It was easy enough, but then a branch broke, and I came down very easily. We'll have to get the doctor.”

“You didn't think, did you?” Millie said. “That apple tree is very old. It's been there for forty or fifty years. The branches aren't strong enough… Don't climb it again.”

Millie helped her sister into the house. Then she telephoned the doctor.

“You haven't broken your leg,” the doctor said. “Stay in bed for a few days, I think it will be all right then.”

“She mustn't climb that tree again,” Millie said.

The doctor smiled at Mattie.“No, not that one,” he said, “climb a stronger tree next time.”

A lady has a problem with her daughter:

My nine-year-old daughter, Maria, is in Year Four. Every evening we got into homework battles(争执). Three afternoons a week, she has activities (netball, singing) after school and by the time we get home, homework is the last thing she feels like doing. The other two days, she gets home early and we argue about whether she should do her homework right after school, or if she should have some time to rest and play first. When Maria at last sits down to do her homework, she seems to want me there helping all the time. I do not want to help her, but I'm sure that she is going to need to be able to do it on her own. And in fact, most of the time, I have other things I need to be doing. It seems that children these days have much more homework than we did, and some of it is really beyond(超越) their abilities(能力). As you can see, I'm really worried about homework and I really don't know what I should do. Any ideas?

Letter A

  Dear Rose,

I like your programmes very much. I'm now writing to ask you something about American social customs(社交习惯). My American friends want me to join them in their dinner party. I am very happy and have decided to go, but I'm a little worried about it, too. The social custom in my country are very different from here, so I'm afraid of making mistakes.

Should I bring a present such as sweets or flowers? Should I arrive on time or a little late? At the dinner table, how can I know which fork or knife to use? How can I let the family know that I'm thankful for their kindness?

Wang Lin

Letter B

  Dear Wang Lin,

It's good idea to bring a small present when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always nice, or you may bring a bottle of wine(酒) if you know that your friends drink it.

You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late. Don't get there early. If you're going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.

Try to be free at the dinner table. If you don't know about choosing the right fork or knife, just watch the other people, and follow them. If you still have no idea of what to do, ask the person next to you.

If you like the food, say so, of course, you'll thank them for the meal and for their kindness. It's also a good idea to send a thank-you card the day after.
