Tom lived a long way from the city. One day he went to the city to buy something in the shop, and after he bought them, he went into a restaurant and sat down at a table. When he looked round, he saw some old people put eye glasses on before reading their books, so after lunch he went to a shop to buy some glasses, too. He walked along the road, and soon found a shop. The man in the shop made him try on(试戴) a lot of glasses, but Tom always said, “No, I can’t read with these.”

The man became more and more puzzled(困惑). At last he said, “Excuse me, but can you read at all?”

“No, I can’t,” Tom said, “If I can read, do you think I come here to buy glasses?”

This is an old story. It was first told long ago. A rich man wanted to make a journey to another town. He was a businessman. He wanted to take things to sell. He also wanted to take some gold to buy some things with. He decided to take ten servants with him. They would carry the things to sell and the food to eat on the journey. He was a kind man. He said to one of his servants, “You are the smallest, the thinnest and the weakest of all my servants. You can not carry a heavy load. You may choose the lightest load to carry.”The servant thanked his master. He pointed to the biggest load. This was bread for them to eat on the journey.“You are foolish,” said his master. “ That is the biggest and heaviest load.” But the servant lifted up the load cheerfully and the journey began. They walked for four hours. Then they stopped for a rest. They all ate some of the bread. Then there was less bread for the servant to carry. The servant’s load grew smaller and lighter every day. At the end of the journey, the smallest servant had nothing to carry.

Bruno was a boy of eight. His father worked in a cinema and his mother worked in a shop. He lived not far from his school. He always walked there and walked home. On his way to school, he had to pass a playground. It was very wet after it rained. One day, when he got home, his clothes were all wet. His mother became angry(生气的) and said, “Don’t play in the water on your way home from school!”

On the next day Bruno came home with wet and dirty(脏的) clothes. His mother became even angrier. “I’ll tell your father if you come back wet again,” said his mother. “He’ll punish(惩罚) you, you know.”

The third day the little boy was dry when he came home.

“You’re a good boy today”, his mother said happily. “You didn’t play in the water.”

Which is better, Radio or Television?

About fifty years ago, when television first came out, people thought that radio was no longer useful. Television has both sounds（声音） and pictures. It is much more real and interesting to watch television than to listen to the radio.

However, fifty years later radio is still very popular and it will be here for a long time. One reason is that we don’t need to see pictures when we listen to the music on the radio. In fact, listening with your eyes closed is the best way to listen to a piece of music. You can think yourself on a sandy beach or up high on a mountain. In other words, you can create (make) your own pictures.

Moreover, while listening to the radio, you don’t have to take your eyes off your work. For example, you can listen to the radio and drive at the same time. Or you can read a book and listen to the radio. Televlsion, on the other hand, doesn’t have this advantage（优势）.

A radio is much smaller than a television. You can take a radio anywhere and turn it on anytime you want. In a quiet place you can use headphones to listen to the news or music on the radio. In this way（用这种方式） you won't disturb（打扰） anybody. Moreover, a radio is much cheaper than a television. For less than \$20 you can buy a small radio and have fun with it.
