When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in a new soldier school in Ashland and not sure if I could make it home for the holidays. On the afternoon of December 23 we were told some of us would have three-day holidays. I was one of the lucky soldiers.

It was Christmas Eve when I arrived, and a light snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see over her, into the corner of the living-room where the tree had always stood. There were lights, all colours, shining in the green of the tree.

“Where did it come from?” I asked.

“I asked the gate boy to cut it, ”my mother said, “I wouldn't have had one just for myself, but when called? Oh, such a rush! He just brought it in this afternoon…”

The tree was almost as tall as the room, and the Tree Top Star was in its place. A few branches reached about a little disorderly at the side, I thought, and there was a big bare branch showing in the middle. But the tree filled the room with the pleasant smell of Christmas.

I felt very sad not to be able to get the ticket for the film “Titanic” last Friday. I learned in the newspaper that tickets could be bought at the cinema box office (售票处) in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 and 4:00. Since I work from 9:00 to 5:30, the only time I could go to the cinema was during my 45-minute lunch time. It is a pity that the cinema is on the other side of the town, and the bus service (服务) between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip (行程) in 45 minutes.

Last Monday I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes, waiting for a bus. By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip so I had to go back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. On Thursday my luck changed. I got on a bus right away and arrived at the cinema in twenty minutes. But when I got there, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. I found that I would not have enough time to wait in line. I caught the next bus and went back across the town.

By Friday I understood my only hope was to make the trip by car. It was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it (值得) to see the film. The trip by car only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I reached the cinema, I was delighted to see that nobody was waiting in line.
