Tom walked into a shop. It had a sign (招牌) outside:“Second-hand (旧的) clothes bought and sold.” He was carring an old pair of trousers and asked the owner of the shop. “How much will you give me for these?” The man looked at them and then said, “Two dollars (美元).”

“What!” said Tom. “I had guessed they were worth at least (至少) five.”

“No,” said the man, “they aren't worth a cent (美分) more than two dollars.”

“Well,” said Tom, taking two dollars out of this pocket, “here's your money, These trousers were hanging outside your shop. The list price (定价) of them was six dollars and a half. But I thought that was too much money, so I wanted to find out how much they were really worth.”

There is a story about an English sailor (水手) who went to countries in the east, the west and the south. He had been to India (印度) and China. One day he came home and brought some tea as a present for his mother. She told her friends about the present and asked them to a “tea party”. When her friends came to the “tea party”, the old woman brought out some tea-leaves and asked them to eat, of course, nobody liked the tea-leaves.

At that time the sailor came in. He looked at the table and said, “Mother, what have you done with the tea?” “I boiled (煮) it as you said.”
