　　Unfortunately(遗憾地)the city is much busier, more expensive, and more dangerous than the country．The air is not as fresh as in the country because of all the cars and trucks on the roads．There are so many people that are not as friendly－you cannot get to know everyone as you do in the country, and people may get lonely．You do not have much room in the city－most people live in apartments－not houses, and they do not have gardens or lots of space, and because of all the people there is also a lot of noises．

　　The country is much cheaper to live and there are less dangerous people than you find in cities．Perhaps the best thing is that you can have a big house with a garden and it will be very quiet, but there are not many jobs or services there．There are also not many shops, schools or hospitals．It is hard to get around in the country．

I knew you'd get the raise! These things will tell you how much I love you．"

　　Following the supper, her husband went into the kitchen to clean up．She noticed that a second card had fallen from his pocket．Picking it off the floor, she read, "Don't worry about not getting the raise! You are good enough for it anyway! These things will tell you how much I love you．"

　　Someone has said that the measure(尺度)of love is when you love without measure．What this man feels for his wife is total acceptance and love, whether she succeeds or fails．His love celebrates her victories and cares for her wounds．He stands with her, no matter what life throws in their direction．

　　If you like unusual places, you should visit the Hebrides Islands．Not many people live on these islands in the northwest of Scotland．The land is not good for farming．It’s only good for keeping sheep．The winters are long, cold, and wet．It’s hard to make a living on the Hebrides, but for a visitor, these islands can be very special．

　　But there is beauty in this place．From the beach you can often see all the way to the rocky hills．From the hills you can see far out to other islands and the open ocean．The colors, too, are special．Blue is everywhere．It’s in the sky and in the ocean．It is in the tiny flowers that grow on the hills．In the spring there is also green in the hills．In the summer and fall the hills are more purple．Often the air is soft and gray with clouds and rain．

　　On these islands you can forget about the rest of the world．The evenings are quiet．The restaurants close early, and there isn’t any nightlife．Visitors stay at a guest house or a Bed and Breakfast．This is the best way to learn about life on the islands．The islanders are often friendly, and they like to talk．

　　If you want to meet islanders, you can also try the pubs(酒吧)or even the shops．People are in no hurry here．They like to chat about the weather or the fishing．There are also some tourist shops, but not many．They sell the usual tourist things．They also sell some beautiful clothes made of wool from the islands．

　　Do not come to the Hebrides for shopping．Come to walk in the clean, cool air．Come for the quiet beauty and for the views．

　　The Amazon rainforest is home to millions of different kinds of animals, plants, and birds．Most of the world's fresh water is here and the forest plants clean the Earth's air every day．

　　Chico was born near the Amazon town, Brazil, in 1944 and started working when he was very young．Like the rest of his family, the boy got the money by taking a little rubber from the trees in the forest．(The trees are not hurt when the rubber is taken．)The forest and its people lived together comfortably(舒适地)and peacefully(和平地)．

　　But some people think too much about themselves and never think about the future．In 1980, the forest was burned to build roads, houses and factories．Chico was angry; he wanted to save the forest!He talked to the government workers, but they didn't listen to him．They were still clearing the rainforests to make quick, easy money．“Many voices are stronger than one,”he thought, so Chico held group meetings．He discovered that hundreds of people agreed with him．His hope grew．More people came together to try to stop the work of the forest clearers．Large areas of the forest were saved．Later he traveled to many other countries for international help．People soon became very much interested in this brave Brazilian．In the next few years Chico's name became famous all over the world．The government of Brazil started making plans to protect large areas of the Amazon rainforest．

　　But as Chico's dreams started coming true, someone stopped him in the only possible way．The famous forest fighter was murdered right outside his home on December 22, 1988．Chico's life was cut short, but his brave new ideas continued in other people．One man changed the world's ideas．After his death, people around the world sent money to help Chico's work．
