The Internet is becoming important in our life. How much do you know about it?

  What is the Internet?

The Internet is a large, worldwide collection of computer networks(网络). A network is a small group of computers put together. Different networks from all over the world make up the Internet. Once you have learned to use the Internet, you can have a lot of fun on the World Wide Web.

What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web has been the most popular development of the Internet. The web is like a big electronic book with millions of pages that are called homepages(主页).

You can find information about almost anything in the world on these pages. For example, you can use the Internet instead of a library to find information for your homework. Electronic mail is a way of sending messages to the other people. It's much quicker and cheaper than sending a letter.

If you want to use E-mail, you must have an E-mail address. This address must have letters and dots(点)and an“@”(meaning“at”). This is what an address looks like: Christina @ yahoo. com. Write a message, type in person's E-mail address, then send the message across the Internet. People don't need to use stamps, envelopes or go to the post office since the invention of the Internet. Quick, easy and interesting--that's the Internet!

Well, Bill. I'm not sure whether to send you to heaven or hell. After all, you greatly helped society by putting a computer in almost every home, yet you also created that terrible Windows XP. I'm going to let you decide where you want to go.

Bill replied,Well, what's the difference between the two?

God said,I'm willing to let you visit both places, to see if it will help your decision.

Okay, then, said Bill,Let's try hell first.

So Bill went to hell. It was a beautiful, clean, sandy beach with clear water and lots of beautiful women running around, laughing and playing about. The sun was shining; the temperature perfect. He was very pleased.

This is great,he told God.If this is hell, I really want to see heaven.

Fine, said God, and off they went.

Heaven was a place high in the clouds, beautiful and sunny, with angels flying about. It was nice, but not as nice as hell.

Hmmm, I think I'd prefer hell,he told God.

  Fine,replied God,as you desire(如你所愿).

So Bill Gates went to hell.

Two weeks later, God decided to see how Bill was doing in hell. When he got there, he found Bill shackled(披枷带锁)to a wall being burned by demons(魔鬼).

How is everything doing? He asked Bill.

This is terrible. This is nothing like the hell I visited two weeks ago. What happened to that other place, with the beaches and the beautiful women playing in the water?

Oh,God said, what you saw is a screensaver(屏幕保护)I designed by myself. Glad you like it!

True or false:

(1) God offered Bill a chance to choose where to go because he thought that Bill was a kind man.

(2) Bill preferred the hell to the heaven.

(3) Bill decided to stay in hell as soon as he got there.

When you speak, write a letter or make a telephone call, your words carry messages. People communicate with words.

Do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on your face shows that you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you raise your hand in class, the teacher knows that you want to say something or ask a question. You shake your head, and people know that you are saying No. You nod and people know that you are sayingYes.

Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at a bus stop helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the wall of your school helps you to find the library. Signs on the doors tell you where to go in or out. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around and that you receive messages from them all the time?

People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawings to tell about all the wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas.

Books, magazines, TV and radio and films all help us to communicate with others. They all help us to know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about.

True or false:

(1) When you raise your hand in class, you are giving a message to your teacher.

(2) Signs may tell you what to do or where to go.

(3) You can get messages from newspapers and films, but not from books or drawings.

(4) Sometimes you can know someone is sad from his face.

(5) Signs in the public places can carry messages.

Salvador Dali was one of the most interesting and unusual painters of all time. He was born in Spain in 1904 and began painting when he was a child. His mother gave him a room in the family home to paint in.

In 1021 he went to study at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts(法南多皇家美术学院). He quickly made friends with other painters there. He did very well at the Academy. However, most people didn't remember his paintings; they remembered his strange clothes and ways.

While he was there, he read a famous book about dreams by Sigmund Freud. Freud said that dreams were very important in our lives. After reading this book, Dali painted strange pictures that looked like dreams. They often showed empty deserts with unusual things in them--like melting watches and faces.

Dali did not only paint pictures. He made clothes and shot movies as well. He also drew pictures for books and made jewels. He loved people watching him. He was always doing unusual things outside his house. People came and watched him. Once he made an egg as big as a man, and put liquid into it. When he opened it, the red liquid, looked like blood, came out of it. Dali said this meant the beginning of life.

Dali was still painting when he was 80. He was so famous that people bought his paintings. He died in 1989.
