The son of a Kentucky frontiersman, Abraham Lincoln had to struggle for a living and for learning.Five months before receiving his party's nomination for President, he sketched(概略)his life:

“I was born on Feb.12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky. My parents were both born in Virginia, of undistinguished families-second families, perhaps I should say.My mother, who died in my tenth year, was of a family of the name of Hanks…My father…removed from Kentucky to…Indiana, in my eighth year…It was a wild region, with many bears and other wild animals still in the woods. There I grew up…Of course when I came of age I did not know much.Still somehow, I could read, write, and cipher…but that was all.”

Lincoln made extraordinary efforts to attain knowledge while working on a farm, splitting rails for fences, and keeping store at New Salem, Illinois. He was a captain in the Black Hawk War, spent eight years in the Illinois legislature, and rode the circuit of courts for many years.

As President, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organization.

  Lincoln won re-election in 1864.

On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated(暗杀)at Ford's Theatre in Washington by John Wilkes Booth, an actor, who somehow thought he was helping the South. The opposite was the result, for with Lincoln's death, the possibility of peace with magnanimity died.

Some animals can be trained to help humans. For example, specially trained dogs help blind people walk around the town safely. Some kinds of monkeys can be taught things too. They can learn how to help people who can't use their arms or legs. The monkeys pick up the phone when it rings, carry shopping bags and do housework.

In the natural world, animals and humans are not usually friends, but there are a few interesting examples where they can work together. In Africa, the honeyguide bird works with humans to find food. The bird likes to eat the grubs-a kind of insect that lives inside a beehive(蜂窝).It knows how to find beehives but it can't open them and get the grubs.People like to eat honey(蜂蜜), but they aren't good at finding beehives, so the bird and the people help each other. The bird flies to a beehive and people follow it.When the people open the beehive and take the honey, they give the grubs to the bird.

In Laguna in the south of Brazil(巴西), fishermen and dolphins work as a team. The ocean isn't very clean, so the fishermen can't see the fish. However, dolphins can find them easily by using sounds. When the dolphins find a large group of fish, they make a noise to tell the fishermen. Then the dolphins push the fish towards the beach. The fishermen wait in the water near the beach and catch a lot of fish in their nets. The fishermen's nets make it easier for the dolphins to catch fish too.In Laguna, fishermen and dolphins have been working together for many years. The fishermen teach their children how to work with the do phins. The dolphins must be happy to help because they teach their babies how to work with the humans!
