Yellow, orange, red and green- tree leaves make autumn a colourful time! Who paints all these colours? It is the leaves themselves. Inside a leaf, there are millions of little colourbags, they are green, yellow and orange. The green ones are called chlorophyll(叶绿素).The yellow ones are called xanthophylls(叶黄素). The orange ones are called carotene(胡萝卜素).

In summer, the green chlorophyll is very, very busy. It makes food for the trees. It catches sunlight to change water and carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)into sugar. This sugar is the food for ther tree. It is so busy that it covers up all of the other colours in the leaf.

When the weather grows colder in autumn, there is less light and water for trees. The trees will have a rest to get ready for winter. They've made enough food in summer! The leaves no longer need water to make food. Without the water, the green chlorophyll starts to go away. The other colours in the leaf-the yellow xanthophylls and orange carotene come out. So the leaves don't reallyturna certain colour. They just lose their green !

But how about the red, purple and green leaves?

The leaves look red or purple because they have some sugar in them. Theystealsome food from the tree! The green leaves are from the evergreen trees (常绿树). The evergreen trees stay green all year long. Their leaves don't lose water in winter.

In general(一般来说)people talk about two groups of colourswarm colours and cool colours. Scientists think that there are also two groups of peoplepeople who prefer(更喜欢)warm colours and people who prefer cool colours.

The warm colours are red, orange and yellow. Where there are warm colours and a lot of light, people usually want to be active(积极的). People think that red is exciting, sociable(善交际的)people, those who like to be with others like red. The cool colours are green, blue and purple. These colours unlike warm colours, are relaxing. Where there are cool colours, people are usually quiet. People who like to spend time alone often prefer blue.

Red may be exciting but one scientist says that time seems to pass more slowly in a room with warm colours than in a room with cool colours. He suggested(建议)that a warm colour such as red or orange, is a good colour for a living room or a restaurant. People who are relaxing or eating don't want time to pass quickly. Cool colours are better for offices as the people who work there want time to pass quickly. Scientists don't know why people think some colours are warm and other colours are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that warm colours remind(使想起)people of warm days and cool colours remind them of cool days.
