Though we were poor, my sister managed to buy me a pair of “magic shoes” that changed my life.
Anne is six years older than me. Growing up, we were very poor, and my mother worked evenings at a factory in a small town. Not seeing my mother much, Anne took over much of the support. During those teenage years, Anne was always there for me, not only as a big sister, but as a mother and my best friend.
When I was seventeen,I had no money. I thought my only chance of going to college was trying to win a scholarship. I had an important interview for such an award. I told her about my interview, that General Motors was sending me a bus ticket, and I would get to visit the city for my scholarship interview. I was excited about the adventure* and asked her advice on what to wear. I showed her my best coat and how I planned to be careful, how I sat so that the hole in the bottom of my shoe would not be seen, but I wasn’t sure what I would do if it rained.
Anne suggested that we should go shopping, and we took the bus to a store. There we found a beautiful pair of leather shoes on sale. She told me to try them on, but I thought it was just for fun .As neither of us had ever owned anything that expensive before. But this time was different. Anne handed me the boxed shoes and said, “Here, I’ll buy these for you.”
“But…” was all I could say.
“You deserve* them,” she replied. “I want to see you get that scholarship.”
I went to the interview and crossed my legs so that my beautiful new shoes shone with pride. I won the scholarship and became an engineer. Now, after twenty years have passed, I still have that pair of shoes with me, and I just wear them on those occasions* when I need to feel special. It’s kind of like having magic slippers when you’re homesick.

Have you ever thrown away a bottle of water? Maybe a bottle of water does not seem like much to you, but it can save the day for people who live in drought-hit* areas in China.

In the past few months, some places in southeast China has experienced a serious drought. In Yunnan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou and Chongqing, there has been very little rain since last autumn. Crops have died. The land has cracked* and wells and rivers have dried up. More than 20 million people are having difficulty finding safe drinking water.

After learning about the drought, many people across the country have helped by giving water, money and other resources*.

Last week, China asked every member of the Communist Youth League and Young Pioneers to give one bottle of water to the drought-hit areas. Students in primary schools and middle schools quickly joined in the activity. “A bottle of water isn’t much, but thousands of bottles will be of great use.” One student said. Some students offer their pocket money to the people there.  Other students also wrote their best wishes on the bottles.

The serious drought has also made students realize that saving water is very important. Some students decided to take a shower twice a week instead of every day, so that they can save a little water. Some students said they would never forget to turn off the water taps after using. Some students even went on the street to tell people to take part in water-saving activities.

Actually, learning how to save water is not difficult, and it can begin with teaching good habits to others around you. All you have to do is to think a little about how easy it is to waste water in everyday activities.

Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you very much for coming to this concert. I hope you have enjoyed the service. As you may know, all the performers have donated their time to help us.

We want to raise money for children in Africa. Every day hundreds of children in Africa die because they have diseases or have not had enough to eat.

Most Africa countries are poor. The land is not good for growing food and the weather is also bad for farming. The Feed Africa Fund﹡is an organization﹡ trying to help these poor people. It spends millions of dollars every year on food for poor people in Africa. This money comes from people like you ---- generous people.

Every dollars you give this evening will go to The Feed Africa Fund. Just one dollar can buy enough rice or corn to feed a family of four for three days.
