Run for Class President

Two months ago, when our class election(选举) started, I decided to run for class president. I enjoyed speaking in public and got along well with people, so I felt it easy to win. But I was _______that people would feel bad for me if I lost.

I was busy preparing in the following week. My plan wasn’t to make promises to do things I couldn’t _______ but to show my class why I wanted to be president. I put up my posters in hallways and in the classroom. I also spent three hours writing my speech, saying that I was the one they could turn to whenever they had a problem. Since I was _______prepared, I felt that my chances of winning were strong.

However, when I gave my speech on Election Day, the response (反应) wasn’t what I had _______. Few people actually listened. When it was my opponent’s (对手的)turn, everyone was screaming his name. His speech was short, but all to the point. By then, I realized I should have made mine shorter and clearer.

It was obvious who would _______. For the rest of the day, I felt like it was over. I wanted to just go home and cry, but I made it through.

My _______ was right: I didn’t win.

The next day, people were still talking about the election. I just pretended (假装) not to hear. But later, things got better. People _______about the election and talked to me just as they did before.

I don’t regret putting time and energy into the election because I’ve learned that things aren’t always going the way I expect. And moments of failure like this build _______ —since then I’ve learned to face disappointment and grown stronger.

Everybody knows Charlie Chaplin, a world-famous comedian(喜剧演员). While watching his films, people everywhere laugh until tears run down their faces.

Born in 1889, Chaplin grew up in a poor family. At the age of five, he began to act as a clown to make money and care for his sick mother. Despite the hard times in his early years, he had a clear goal: to become a great stage artist.

And Chaplin did become a great silent movie star years later. He knew what it meant to be poor and what it meant to be a nobody. The littletramp (流浪小子)he played in his films always has a black moustache(小胡子),wide-open eyes, a round black hat and large shoes. The tramp makes all kinds of stupid mistakes, but he never gives up his dream of becoming a great man. Even people who don't understand English can enjoy Chaplin's silent films. It isn't what he says that makes people laugh. His comedy (喜剧) doesn't depend on words. It depends on little actions, which mean the same thing to people all over the world.

That was how Chaplin became one of the greatest comedians in the world. In his book, he told us how to succeed in life: "You have to believe in yourself. That's the secret."

Can't decide what you want to be when you grow up? Well, now you can try out one or all your dream jobs in a day, at a theme park called Wannado City (理想城). The best part is you don't have to get any special training or go to school.

Wannado City is located in Florida (佛罗里达州), America. It is a large theme park. In the park, everything is just like the real world except that it is run by kids. The doctors, actors/actresses, teachers and policemen are all under the age of 15. With over 120 jobs to choose from, kids can be almost anything they want to be!

When they go inside the city, each kid gets some money. They can also make more money by getting jobs. In this world, jobs are easy to find and money is easy to make.

After a hard day’s “work”, kids can take the roller-coaster (过山车) and then have dinner.
