Imagine you are living in a moving house. Inside the house, there is a small kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Everything you need is close at hand.

In the US, you can really see these moving houses on the road. They are called recreational vehicles (RV,房车).People call them houses on wheels. When it's holiday time, the whole family often gets into this lovely house and hits the road for a trip across the country.

Compared to a real house, this home on the road is small for a family who has to spend every hour of every day together. But the best thing about it is that it changes your journey into a free exploration (探索).

You can drive as long as you like without worrying about finding hotels. Or you can just stop somewhere nice and stay for a few weeks. You may also come across other families who are on road trips. Together, you take out your tents and snacks. It's camping time with a lot of chat and laughter.

Of course, RVs are not always convenient. They can sometimes break down and you have to spend time mending them. But this type of road trip still wins people's hearts because they can go whenever and wherever they want.

For ten weeks, in a great house on the island of St Thomas, John C. Lilly tried to teach a six-?year?-old dolphin to speak English. Margaret Howe, an experiment (试验) helper, would live day and night with Peter, a dolphin. And they would eat, bathe (洗澡), sleep and play together from Sunday to Friday, with only Saturdays off for Margaret. She lived her life in swimming clothes—with a coat on colder evenings—and cut her hair short so that she could get on with Peter more easily.

After a few days, Peter was becoming more and more interested in winning her attention. He threw a ball against her shower towel to get her to play. As time went by, he only wanted to play ball with her and not on his own.

The problem was that, just at the time Peter and Margaret began to get on well just as two best friends, the experiment ended and the lab was closed. After a few weeks, Margaret received the sad news that Peter had killed himself by refusing to breathe, and sinking to the bottom of his pool.

Television is one of the greatest technological inventions of the twentieth century. A Scottish man called John Logie Baird invented it. Inventors in the USA and Europe were working on electronic television systems (系统) but Baird used a mechanical (机械的) system. In 1925, he was able to send the first black and white picture — of the head of a doll — from one end of his flat (公寓) to the other. He then used a local office boy, not the doll, and this teenager was the first person ever to appear on TV. Baird made the first television programmes for the BBC in 1929. These programmes had sound, not just pictures.

However, Baird’s system was very limited and basic. A totally electronic system was more popular and practical (实用的). The inventor of this electronic system was an American, Philo Farnsworth. In 1936, the BBC started using Farnsworth’s system because the picture was better than Baird’s.

Colour TV began in the USA in the 1940s but only a small number of people had colour televisions in their houses. They were very expensive. In Britain and the USA, the first regular (有规律的) colour TV programmes only began in 1967.

Now in the 21st century, we have digital (数字的) television. TV has changed a lot since the face of a boy appeared on TV in John Logie Baird’s flat!
