Fresh green grass. Hundreds of colorful wild flowers. Water running into little pools. Birds making their homes in boxes. The 9, 500-square-metre Augustenborg Botanical Garden may look just like any other well-organized park but there’s a difference. It lies on the roofs(屋顶) of industrial and office buildings in the city of Malmo in Sweden.

Green roofs are not a new invention. And now they are getting popular again. The common roofs of a modem city have endless black surfaces with no life or water. Perhaps that's why a garden on a roof becomes such a perfect choice for more and more people.

Green roofs are not just pretty. They also help to moderate the city temperature. The high temperatures on common roofs in the summer can make top floor flats uncomfortably hot. What is more, they play a part in making the cities hotter than the countryside around them, causing the "urban heat-island effect". On a green roof, however, with its plants and water, temperatures change only a little, as they do in a park. This can greatly cut the costs of heating and cooling in the building below.

Also, a green roof takes in rain water, and protects the city drainage(排水) system. ________. And small animals and birds can make their homes on it. Thanks to this, the city may become part of nature, rather than something completely separate from it.

While the cost of building such a roof can still be higher, it can be cheaper in the long term as a result of energy savings. And wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to walk out into a garden high above the city's noise and traffic, whether you're at school or in an office or just at home in a ten-floor block.

A.The Augustenborg Botanical Garden is the same as any other well-organized park.

Twelve animal head statues(生肖兽首雕像) are well-known treasures from Yuanmingyuan, or the Old Summer Palace. After Anglo-French troops(英法联军) broke into the old Summer Palace in 1860, a large number of national treasures, including the 12 animal head statues, were taken away.

On November 13th, 2019, a red bronze(铜) horse-head statue returned to Beijing. It was donated by Macao collector Stanley Ho and handed over to the National Cultural Heritage Administration(国家文物局) in Beijing.

“The broken link(链接) of history memory is connected again in this way,” Liu Yuzhu, director of the NCHA, told China Daily when she was in an interview.

“The return of the heritage(文物) holds the Chinese’s collective emotion(集体情感). People’s cultural confidence can be strengthened. It will also encourage more compatriots (同胞), both at home and abroad, to better protect the cultural heritage of our country.”

In the past 70 years, the Chinese government and many compatriots have made a great contribution to getting back lost Chinese heritage from foreign countries. Because of their hard work, the horse statue is the seventh of the 12 animal statues to be returned from other countries. Now the search is on for the remaining five: a dog, a rooster, a dragon, a sheep and a snake.

1.When were the 12 animal head statues taken away from Yuanmingyuan?

2.Who donated the red bronze horse-head statue to China last year?

3.What does Liu Yuzhu do?

4.How many animal head statues have returned to China?

5.Why do so many compatriots try to get back lost Chinese heritage?

China and Western countries may have different cultural beliefs(信仰) about certain animals, but when it comes to pigs, somehow(不知怎的) we have the same idea – we agree that pigs are ugly and lazy.

But the truth is that pigs do have some finer qualities. And maybe there’s no better time to clear their names than now, with the end of the Year of the Pig on January 24 this year.

For starters, science long ago proved that pigs aren’t stupid at all. According to a research, “pigs are as clever as dogs and chimpanzees.” They like to play. They can remember things for a long time. And they can decide who treat them well and who don’t.

There are lovable pig characters in cartoons too. Peppa Pig, an English animated (动画的) television series that begin in 2004, has now become one of the most popular cartoons in 180 countries and areas. The four members in the cartoon’s pig family teach children from all over the world to get on well with friends. Their daily stories show that family members are the most valuable persons to cherish (珍惜). And in China, the adventures(冒险) of McDull, a piglet who works hard towards his dreams even though he seldom succeeds, have been made into films since 2001. McDull is slow and patient, and not afraid of repeated failures. He has a heart of gold.

Perhaps these are the qualities of pigs to keep in mind when we say goodbye to the Year of the Pig—their intelligence (智力), cuteness, patience and innocence(无邪).
