Mr. Sun is in the hot seat for stealing a woman’s seat on a high-speed train on Aug 21, 2018.

A video online showed the man, Sun, taking a window seat in a second-class coach（车厢）of a train from Jinan to Beijing on Tuesday and refusing to give it to the woman who had the seat on her ticket.

“You have three choices — stand, take my seat or go to the dining coach,” Sun told the young woman in the video. According to the tickets, Sun’s seat was one row behind the woman’s. Sun refused to return to his own seat, saying that he couldn’t stand up. When asked by a train worker why he did not stand up, he answered “I did not know how”. He kept his words even after the train arrived at his stop, requiring train workers to find a wheelchair for him. Clearly, he did not need one when getting on the train. Later, the woman was led to the business-class coach where she was given a better seat for the trip.

The video quickly spread online. Many internet users criticized（批评）Sun for his actions. Some even dug up his name, education and work history and posted the information online. In the end, Sun was fined 200 yuan and will not be allowed to buy train tickets for 180 days.

This punishment was based on rules for dealing with troublesome passengers set out by railway authorities（政府部门）. The rules came into use on May 1, 2018. According to the rules, passengers who disturb（扰乱）public order will be fined up to 500 yuan and be prevented from buying train tickets for some time.

However, more things like this have still happened, pushing authorities to work out even more strict rules. On Sept 19, Mrs. Zhou took a window seat on a train from Hunan to Guangdong. When the window seat passenger asked her to give the seat back, she refused.

In turn, the government of Guangdong province set up new rules that came into use on Dec 1. High-speed train passengers who refuse to move after taking others’ seats will face fines from 500 to 2,000 yuan. Their information will be shared with other parts of the national railway network, which will influence their right to buy train tickets.

One early morning, I went into the living room to find my mother reading a thick book called Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again. My interest was aroused only by the fact that the word “Poems” appeared in big, hot pink letters.

“Okay,” I was still weeping (流泪). My scare has gone. But I could not help thinking about that silly poem. After what seemed like a safe amount of time, I read the poem again and was confused. It all fit so well together, like a puzzle. The language was simple, so simple I could obviously understand its meaning, yet it was still beautiful. I was now fascinated (着迷) by the idea of poetry, words that had the power to make or break a person’s world.

In many – even most – space-themed films, whenever Earth faces a disaster, the solution is always fleeing the planet in spaceships. But the latest Chinese sci-fi movie, The Wandering Earth, offers a different and more ambitious idea.

In response, humans around the world work together to build a giant engine system that will push Earth away from the sun. Instead of abandoning Earth again – this time we’re taking it with us.

This “ambition” didn’t come from nowhere. For thousands of years, “homeland” has had a soft spot in the hearts and minds of Chinese people. One old idiom is luoyeguigen, which means returning to one’s homeland in old age, like fallen leaves returning to the roots of their tree. Or look to an ancient verse: “The season called the White Dew begins tonight/Nowhere as in our native place is the moon so bright”. These both show the tight bond that Chinese people have had with their homeland.This special cultural background is probably what sets The Wandering Earth apart from Hollywood-style space films.

“What is Chinese sci-fi?” Guo Fan, the film’s director, said in an interview. “A vehicle that can really express our cultural and spiritual core can be called Chinese sci-fi. Otherwise, we’re just imitating others and telling the same American stories.”

And the makers of The Wandering Earth may have chosen the best time to tell its Chinese sci-fi story. The film was released on Feb 5, the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a time when many people had just made the hard journey back to their hometowns.

Mystery of mirages

Earlier this month on a Sunday afternoon, a giant “ancient city” appeared on the surface of Hongze Lake in Jiangsu province. But after about half an hour, the “city” was gone.

You might think that some unknown forces were at work, but it’s believed that the “city on the lake” was actually a mirage.

A mirage is a trick that light and air play with bur vision（视觉）. Normally, light travels in a straight line, but it can bend（弯曲）and change direction depending on what it passes through. This bending is called "refraction （折射）”.

If different layers（层）of air are at different temperatures, light will bend at different angles（角度）when passing through them. This can create a false image（影像）of a nearby object.

Take the “city on the lake” as an example. The layer of air near the lake is colder than the higher layers, as the lake absorbs（吸收）most of the heat. The buildings in the mirage were actually on a nearby mountain. But their image showed up above the lake after light refracted in different layers of air.

Mirages happen not only over large bodies of water, but anywhere where the ground can absorb a lot of heat. They are often seen on hot roads and in deserts. The next time you think you see a pool of water on the road on a hot summer day, you will know it's just a mirage—an image of the sky caused by bending light.
