Every year in the U.S.，people celebrate April 12 as the National Drop Everything and Read Day.It is a day to celebrate books and reading. And it’s also the birthday of the writer Beverly Cleary.

Beverly Cleary is a famous writer of children’s books.Some of her most famous books are Ramona the Pest，The Mouse and the Motorcycle，Henry Huggins and Dear Mr.Henshaw.

Ms. Cleary was slow to learn to read herself. She was born in 1916，and found the cooks of the time not interesting. Later on，Ms.Cleary because a librarian. One day，a student asked her where he could find books about children like himself.She got to know there weren’t many books about ordinary（普通的）children，and she set out to write them.

Ms. Cleary wrote until she was 83，writing over 40 books in all. This April 12，she turned 103.More than 91 million（百万）copies of her books have been sold，and the stories have been translated（翻译）into many different language.

One of Ms. Cleary’s most famous characters（人物）is Ramona Quimby，also known as Ramona the Pest. In the book Ramona Quimby，Age 8，Ramona talks about a reading activity in her class called “Drop Everything and Read（D.E.A.R）.”During D.E.A.R.，students can go wherever they want in a classroom and read whatever they choose to read.
