An island with beautiful beaches and clear blue water full of colorful fish... this is Socotra(索科特拉岛). It sounds nice,but it doesn’t sound very unusual, doesn’t it? Well, there is a lot more to Socotra than that. You can see things there that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Socotra is in the Indian Ocean, 250 kilometers east of Africa and 340 kilometers south of Yemen. The island separated (分离) from Africa six million years ago, and over that time it has developed its own special plant life. If you travel away from the beautiful beaches and up into the rocky mountains in the middle of the island, you may feel like you're going back in time.

Perhaps you will see the desert rose with its pretty pink flowers. The desert rose is a “bottle" tree. It stores water in its fat trunk. Like many of Socotra's plants, it has developed to survive in the island' s hot, dry weather.

One of the most unusual plants on Socotra is the "dragons’ blood "tree. It is shaped like an umbrella, with a lot of branches under a green top. The tree gets its name from the red sap(树液)that comes out when it is cut. This sap has been used for centuries as a medicine and to make red dye and paint.

Socotra isn't an easy place for tourists to visit. To get there, you need to fly from Yemen. There are only a few Hotels in its largest town, Hadibo, and the island doesn't have many good roads. The people there live a very simple life. But more and more visitors are coming to Socotra to see its special natural beauty.

Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答问题):

Alice's mother died when she was five. The year was 1925, and life was hard. Alice, who grew up to be my mother, told me that her family couldn't afford to buy her even a doll as a Christmas gift.

In December 1982, I had a job at a local bank. One afternoon, we were getting ready for the Christmas season. One of my customers came to me with her beautiful handmade dolls. I decided to get one for my daughter, Kate, who was almost five years old. Then I had an idea, I asked my customer if she could make me a special doll for my mother--one with gray hair and glasses: a grandmother doll. And she said yes.

Things really started to fall into place when a friend had told me that his dad who played Santa Claus in my area would be willing to make a visit on Christmas morning to our home to deliver my Katie her present.

Christmas Day arrived at the planned time, so did Santa Claus. I had prepared the presents for Santa to deliver, along with the one for my mother.

My daughter was surprised and happy to get the gift from Santa. As Santa turned to leave, he looked once more into his bag and brought out one more gift. Then he asked who Alice was. My mother was surprised to hear her name. Then Santa handed her the gift, and also a message card that read:
