The Silk Road is the name of different roads that long ago connected Europe, Africa and Asia. People reached these different places along these roads. Scientists believe people began to travel the Silk Road about 3000 years ago. By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the world, the Silk Road covered almost 6500 kilometers. It spread from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.

Traders travelling along the Silk Road carried silk, of course. They also carried and traded spices(香料),cloth, valuable stones and gold.

There is a famous old story along the old road. It is said that Roman soldiers travelled through central Asia. They started to live somewhere near the ancient Chinese village of Liqian. Some of these Romans married local Chinese women and the story of blue-eyed villages of China was started.

During its busiest period, .the Silk Road allowed people from many different cultures and countries to meet each other and mix. The Silk Road allowed the sharing of valuable goods and new ideas. These included people and trading goods from the Mediterranean, Persian, Magyar, Armenian, Bactrian, Indian and Chinese areas. All these peoples travelled the Silk Road, and they shared goods, stories, languages, and cultures.

In modem times, the old Silk Road routes(路线)are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels and horses. There is even a Silk Route Museum in Jiuquan in China. It has over 35,000. objects from all along the Silk Road. In this way, China protects the history of many countries and peoples.

Don’t be too surprised if you see a car going down the road without a driver in Beijing these days. It might be one of Baidu’s self-driving cars.

Self-driving cars have been in development since 2010, when Google announced that it was making such cars. Since then, companies like Tesla, Uber and Baidu have been working to produce and test their own self-driving cars.

Self-driving cars are expected to change the way we get around. They are safer and more environmentally friendly than usual cars. They can remove the stress of driving and allow disabled or blind people to get around more easily.

But self-driving cars have their own flaws (缺陷)as well. In one test, researchers pointed a laser pointer (激光棒)at the car’s sensors (传感器)while it was moving. The car mistakenly thought that the laser beam(激光束)was in its way and slowed down or changed direction. Flaws like this could be used by people to trick self-driving cars.

The software (软件)that is used to direct the cars may not be safe enough. It may crash (崩溃),When we use our computers or smart phones, they sometimes crash without any reason. But if this happened to a self-driving car, the results could be deadly. Improvements to the software could be a way to deal with this problem.

Anyway, whether you like it or not, it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and popular on our roads.
