We got to the clean, lovely city of Yangzhou early in the morning. This is our first trip to China. All the different smells attract our attention(吸引我们的注意) to the local food. We are going to try something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying is not expensive but very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to the Great Wall in the north.

Sunday, April 27th

We visited the famous Slender West Lake which was crowded with visitors from all over the world. We also bought a lot of toys for our fiends outside the gate of the park. Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will do the famous foot message(按摩) and then leave for the Great Wall. We will take the night train to Beijing, stay in Beijing for two days, and then catch a bus to the Great Wall.

Wednesday, April 30th

Our trip to the Great Wall was long and boring. We visited a small village beside the mountain. The village people here live a quiet life. They are the kindest people w have ever met. They always smile and say “Hello”. Ralph and I can only speak a little Chinese, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness.

As prices and building costs keep rising, the “do-it-yourself” (DIY) trend in the USA continues to grow. “We needed furniture for our living rooms,” says John Ross, “and we just didn’t have enough money to buy it. So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs. w John got married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for $ 280 at a night school. Now they make all their furniture and repairs around the house.

Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife has died. He has a full-time job at home as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $ 420. “I was deeply upset about it. Now I’ve finished a car repair course. I should be able to fix the car by myself.”

John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything they can to save money so they can fight the high cost of living.
