5.Yangzhou is a cultural city.It has a long history of about 2,500years since King Fu Chai of Wu dug Hangou and built Hancheng.There were three golden times in the history of Yangzhou.It took shape in the Han Dynasty,developed in the Tang Dynasty and reached its top in the Qing Dynasty.
A number of politicians,writers and artists such as Li Bai,Du Fu of the Tang Dynasty and Ouyang Xiu and Su Dongpo of the Song Dynasty all served as officials or went sightseeing there and left many poems describing the beauty of Yangzhou.Li Bai once sailed down the Yangtze River in the spring toward Yangzhou to see off his friend,and wrote a wildly loved poem.Another poet,Xu Ning,praised Yangzhou in his poem for its‘two thirds of the natural beauty under heaven'.Du Mu's verse‘The Twenty-four Bridges are shrouded in the bright moonlight'made the Twenty-four Bridge known to both Chinese and foreign tourists.‘Eight eccentrics of Yangzhou'enjoy special qualities in their works of art.In history,Yangzhou was a famous and open city.In the Tang dynasty,it is the biggest city in Southeast China.Over 10thousand foreign businessmen lived in Yangzhou then.Master Jianzhen from the Daming Temple in Yangzhou,went eastward to Japan to spread China's culture.When the monk passed away,his disciples made a sculpture of him which has been preserved by Japan as a State treasure.Marco Polo,the well-known Italian traveler,once stayed in the city.His Travels of Marco Polo gives lots of descriptions of Yangzhou.
As has been mentioned above,Yangzhou culture is a window of the culture of the nation.Now the people of Yangzhou are working together to build the city into a more prosperous and cultured one.
