Dear Sir,

Thirty years ago, I walked into your bakery(面包房) and asked for some loaves(块)of bread to sell. At that time I was twelve years old. A young lady was working that day. She gave me five loaves and wished me good luck.

I took the loaves and went out to sell them. It took me all day, but I sold them all. At the end of the day, I had some money. I was the happiest boy in the world as I walked home that evening.

The next day, I went to a bicycle shop. I paid a deposit(定金)on a new bicycle. And then I started my next job—as a newspaper deliver(递送)boy. Soon I could pay the rest of the money for the bicycle and the bike was mine. I was so proud!

Today, I still work in the delivery business. I have a lot of trucks to send goods(货物)all over the country. I live in a beautiful house, but I don’t ride a bicycle these days. I drive a large and nice car.

I do not know who that young lady was. But because she gave me the start, I have become a successful man. I’d like to show my thanks to her.

Yours,

George Jenkins

Here are five points you can follow to improve your English, and the first point is the most important.

It’s your duty to achieve your aims (目标)!

Studying English is your own duty and not the duty of your teacher or your parents. You must take an active (积极的) part in your classes!

Get a teacher or attend a class!

It’s a little difficult to study English alone. Also, it’s difficult to learn how to speak English if you don’t have an English teacher or someone else to talk with.

Work as hard as possible!

You need to practice speaking often. You should do all of your homework, study vocabulary lists outside class, and check the homework in time.

Keep studying!

Don’t stop for a long time even during a summer holiday! To make good progress, you should study at least 5 hours each week.

Make English your hobby and have fun!

You can improve your English through other activities:

Reading — choose English books that you can read.

English songs — choose your favorite English songs and sing them again and again.

DVDs — many films are in English with subtitles in your language.

Travel — traveling in English-speaking countries can help you with your English.

Dr. Albert Schweitzer was a jungle doctor in Africa. He was born in France. He had learned to play the piano since he was five and he was a very good musician.
