Politeness(礼貌) is a mark of civilization. The sooner children learn this, the better. In any case, a lot can be completed by a smile and good manners.

Like it or not, our adult lives will be consumed(消费,消耗) by the struggle for money, but we don’t make an effort to teach children how to manage it. So our schools have a duty to teach them this ability from the beginning.

If we agree that the use of education is to prepare us for life, then there is very little time to waste. So, while we can, we ought to try our best to teach children something really useful. Here is what our schools should teach.

We’re likely to accept something we are told, but that’s not what educated people do. Educated people are reasonable (理性的)and they look at facts. If our schools teach nothing else, they should at least teach critical(批判性的)thinking.

Children should learn to take care of their health. They should know that if they eat junk food(垃圾食品), they will become fat and unhealthy. They should be very clear about what happens to their bodies when they drink or smoke.

All of us are part of society. We have rights and duties. We ought to understand what they are. We have to know a little bit of our history and geography, because we need to have an environment in which to connect to the people around us.

How will we test students on these? We can’t. But that’s not a reason to avoid teaching what is important. Our schools should spend every moment they have telling this to our children: “This is life, this is what you are going to face, and this is how you deal with it.”

How could we tell time if there were no watches or clocks any where in the world?

The sun was probably the world’s first “clock”, except in the far north, where the Eskimos live. There, it’s dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer. But in most of the world, people have used the sun fully, if you don’t have a clock that shows time, you still know that when the sun shines, it’s day, and when it’s dark, it’s night. The sun can not only tell you whether it’s day or night but also it’s morning, noon, or afternoon. When the sun is almost over your head, it’s noon.

People who live near the sea can tell time from the tides(潮水). In the daytime, for about six hours, the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for about six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are two high tides and two low tides every twenty-four hours.

Seaman on a ship tells time by looking at the moon and the stars. The whole sky is their clock.

In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.

A sand clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture, you would have what is called an hourglass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the bottom part in exactly one hour. When the hourglass is turned over the sand will take another hour to go back again.

For hundreds of years, scientists have been trying to answer what things have an influence on people’s emotions. What your feeling is always controlled by many things. Your emotions can be influenced by your personality (个性), by the actions of others and by events around you. Perhaps you don’t know your emotions can be influenced by the weather as well.

People often say they feel good when the sun is shining and sad when it is cloudy. In fact, sunlight makes us feel good. When sunlight hits our skins, our bodies produce a vitamin(维生素). Vitamins are natural chemicals which we all need to stay healthy. Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D. Vitamin D helps our bodies make a special chemical. This special chemical influence our brains and makes us feel happy. For example, there are long, dark winters of little sunlight in Sweden and Norway, so many people in these countries often feel sad. Without much sunlight, their bodies produce less vitamin D. Without enough vitamin D, their bodies make less ofthis special chemical which makes them feel good. To help the people in these countries feel better, special“sunrooms”with man-made lights have been built. People can go there and get “sunlight” for an hour or two.

The weather can also influence people’s emotions in other ways. Hot weather can make people angry because people feel uncomfortable when they are hot. In the same way, rain can make people angry because being wet can be unpleasant. As you can see, the weather can have an effect on the chemicals which control our brains. Through these ways, the weather can influence our emotions. Sadly, while the weather can change us, we can hardly change the weather.

1. Which of the following can bet described as a factor(因素) that can influence one’s emotions?

2.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “emotions” in Chinese?

3.Which of the following is TRUE about vitamin D according to the passage?

A. It is a kind of man-made chemical.

B. It makes us worried by influencing our brains.

C. It is needed by us all to keep fit.

D. It is in the sunlight.

4.What may be the best title for this passage?

A. Why Do We Feel Sad.

B. The Weather Influences People’s Emotion.

C. People Need More Vitamin D.

D. We Can Hardly Change the Weather.
