Where is the True Home of the Hamburger?

The kind of beef we see in hamburgers, minced (切碎的) beef, was possibly invented by Mongolians over 800 years ago. But who first put the beef in between pieces of bread and called it a hamburger? Three different cities in the United States all say that they were the first to invent America's favourite food.

Some people say that Fletcher Davis, from Athens, invented hamburgers. “Old Dave”,as people called him,

was selling minced beef sandwiches in his lunch bar as early as the 1880s. Some years later, they say that a group of Germans called ①his sandwich a “hamburger” because people from the German city of Hamburg ate this kind of beef.

Other people believe that the hamburger came from a different American city.②Coincidentally,its name was also Hamburg. The Menches brothers were selling pork sandwiches at a fair in 1885,but when there was no more pork, they used minced beef and gave it a new name, the “hamburger”.

The third possible inventor of the hamburger was Charlie Nagreen, also known as “Hamburger Charlie”,from Seymour. He said that in 1885 he invented the world's first hamburgers. Seymour now celebrates the invention of the hamburger every year. In 1989,it was the home of the world's largest ever burger—over 2,500 kg!

Ⅱ.阅读理解

In the United States, sixteen is a special age when teenagers can begin driving. There's often a special celebration for a girl's 16th birthday —a big party called Sweet-16.

About a month before the party, the girl's family sends out invitations to the guests (客人) .The guests must buy special presents for the birthday girl and find good clothes to wear. A Sweet-16 present usually costs $ 40 to $ 60. This is about $ 20 more than the usual cost of a birthday present.

The party itself is not held at someone's house. The family rents a big hall for the event. Food, cakes and a DJ are provided. Around 6 o’clock in the evening, guests arrive and greet the birthday girl. Then the girl and her father have a special father-daughter dance. After that, guests dance for about 30 to 45 minutes.

Then there is the most important part of the Sweet-16 party, the Candle-Lighting ceremony (仪式) .The Sweet-16 girl stands behind 16 unlit candles and gives each candle to her friends, family, and anyone that she feels is important to her. A lot of crying and hugging goes on at this time. After that, people sit and eat. Most guests begin leaving around 11 o’clock.

I have been to two Sweet-16s this year. I am one of the youngest students in my grade. I'll have to wait another year before I can have my own special Sweet-16 party. I can^ wait for it!
