Officials at Washington, D.C.'s National Zoo have announced that Tai Shan, the wildly popular four-year-old giant panda, will return to his parents' Chinese homeland in early 2010.
Tai Shan was born on July 9th, 2005.His parents were two Chinese-born pandas-Mei Xiang and Tian Tian.They came to the National Zoo in 2000.As part of the loan(租赁)agreement with the Chinese government, any pandas born to Mei Xiang and Tian Tian must be returned to China.
Tai Shan is very popular in Washington, D.C.Only a few months old when he was shown to the public.Tai Shan created a wonder among the public.Thirteen thousand tickets to see him were sold out within two hours.Millions of visitors have waited in line to see Tai Shan since Tai Shan was born.
Having grown to over 200 pounds in weight, the name“Tai Shan”fits well:it means“peaceful mountain”.On July 9th, 2009, the zoo celebrated Tai Shan's fourth birthday with a cake made from water, bamboo, beets(甜菜)and beet juice.
“It's hard to say goodbye,”said Steve Monfort, National Zoo Director,“but we are so thankful for the memories and huge opportunities Tai has provided to the National Zoo.Tai will move to the Wolong's Bifengxia Base in Ya'an, Sichuan.”
