As the old saying goes, “A new broom sweeps clean.” Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States, took office on Jan 20. Soon after that, the new president began using his power to make changes to the country by signing several executive orders (总统行政令).The orders include the travel ban (禁令) on refugees (难民) and people from seven mainly Muslim countries, like Iraq and Syria. Trump believes this helps keep terrorism (恐怖主义) out of the US. He also signed an order to build a wall along the southern border, aiming to stop smugglers (走私者) and Mexicans moving to the US illegally (非法地) .

Trump pointed out on his Facebook that this is about keeping the US safe. However, many people, both from the US and other countries, are against the orders. Judges in the US say that Trump’s travel ban is unconstitutional (违背宪法的), as it is a kind of discrimination (歧视) against Muslims. And world leaders, groups and businesses including those from the United Nations and European Union are also against or have criticized the ban.

Trump also signed another controversial (有争议的) order about the economy. He decided to quit the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP, 跨太平洋伙伴关系协定). It was a free trade agreement between 12 countries around the Pacific, including Australia, Singapore and Japan. TPP was the product of seven years of work under former US President Barack Obama.
