BEIJING--Lights went out for an hour at some famous landmarks and homes all over the world on March 28 for Earth Hour 2010. It is a global event created by the WWF(World Wildlife Fund) to make people pay more attention to climate change.
From the Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge to the Eiffel Tower in Pari sand London’s Houses of Parliament, lights went out to encourage people to cut energy use.
Organizers said the action showed that a great number of people wanted the government to take measures to fight global warming by the end of 2010. "We have been dreaming of a new climate deal for a long time," said Kim Carstensen, head of a global climate organization. "Now we’re no longer alone with the dream. We’re sharing it with all these people turning off their lights," he said.
Australia first held Earth Hour in 2007 and it went global in 2008, attracting 50 million people. WWF is hoping one billion people from 1,000 cities in nearly 90 countries will take part in the event.
Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai, the Bird’s Nest in Beijing and many other famous buildings in China also joined in this event.

He Junquan is a Chinese swimmer and has won many Paralympic(残奥会) gold medals. Born in Jingmen, Hubei province, He Junquan was a healthy boy. But one day at the age of three, he climbed up to the high-voltage electricity(高压线) box and lost both of his arms forever. He became a disabled boy!
From then on he learnt to do everything with his feet: writing, eating, getting dressed and taking things. Seeing other pupils swimming in the river, he jumped in, too. Without arms, he suffered a lot in the river at the beginning. But he finally learnt to balance himself in water and could swim much faster than the other pupils. Once he even saved a little boy who fell into the water and couldn’t swim. His father was so happy to see that this son had a talent in swimming.
In 1995, He Junquan became a real swimmer. He practices swimming for more than four hours every day. Since 1996, he has won more than twelve gold medals of the world class. The first Earth Hour was held in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals(个体) and more than two thousand businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Only a year later Earth Hour had grown into a global event with more than 50 million people across 35 countries and territories（行政区）participating(参加). They also say when it comes to save energy and money, big changes start with small steps like turning out the lights. Now people are all joining together in a global effort to show that it’s possible to work on global warming. Earth Hour has brought about some new changes to our lives. People join in activities such as candle-lit dinners and star-gazing parties as a response to the call for "going dark".

This year , Earth Hour is asking people to take the next step and go beyond one hour.
