In the United States, headmasters(校长) and teachers discipline(惩罚)students in several ways. The teacher often writes to or calls the student’s parents. Sometimes students have to stay at school for one hour. If a student behaves(行为)very badly, the headmaster can stop the student having classes. The student can’t come to school for one, two or three days. Mr.Lazares, the headmaster of a middle school in Ohio, did not like to do so. When he didn’t let the students come to school, they were happy. “A three-day holiday!” They thought.
One day, a boy was in Mr.Lazares’s office. The boy was not behaving well in class. Mr.Lazares telephoned the boy’s parents. “If you come to school with your son, I won’t stop him having classes,” he said. The boy’s father came to school and went with his son to every class. Other students looked at the boy and his father. The boy was embarrassed(难为情). After that he behaved better. And of course other students behaved better, too.
Now headmasters all over the USA are trying Mr.Lazares’s idea. They, too, think that students behave better when parents come to school.

The Spring Festival is the biggest festival for Chinese people all around the world.. The celebration usually lasts for 15 days. There is a lot to do.
On the eve of the Spring Festival, family members get together and have big meals. Their favourite dish on this day is dumplings.
Days before the Spring Festival, families will clean their homes. People think cleaning sweeps away bad luck. It makes the house ready for good luck.
The colour red is everywhere during the Spring Festival. People think red is a happy colour and will bring them a bright future. People wear red, too. They decorate (装饰) their homes with pieces of red paper. Kids get a lot of “hong bao”. It is a red paper bag with money in it. Usually, older people give younger ones hong bao. They think it brings good luck.
The Spring Festival is the time to make everybody happy. So don’t say any bad words or do anything that will bring unhappiness to other people.
For instance, you’d better not say any bad words like “death”. Don’t break anything. People think that it means your luck is running out.

You’re in a department store and you see two fashionable young women, looking at a sweater. You listen to their conversation:
“I can’t believe it—a Lorenzo Bertolla! They are hard to find. It’s much cheaper than the one Sara bought in Rome.”
They leave and you go over to see this sweater. You’ve never heard of Lorenzo Bertolla, but those girls looked really fashionable. They must know. So, you buy it. You never realize that those young women are employees of an advertising agency. They are actually paid to go from store to store, talking loudly about Lorenzo Bertolla clothes.
Every day we notice what people are wearing, drinking and eating. If the person looks cool, the product seems cool, too. This is the secret of undercover marketing (秘密行销). Companies from Ford to Nike are starting to use it. It can reach people that don’t pay attention to traditional advertising. For example, consumers between the age of 18 and 34. They have a lot of money to spend, but they don’t believe ads.
So advertising agencies hire (雇佣) young actors to “perform” in bars and other places where young adults go. Some people might call this practice misleading, but the marketing manager Jonathan Reseller calls it creative. “Look at traditional advertising. Its effectiveness is decreasing”

How can we keep the environment? One way is to remember the Four Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rebuy.
Reduce
We need to use reusable materials and products. We also need to reduce the packaging that is used for new goods in shops. It is important that we improve our use of paper, cardboard, glass, metal, plastic, and other materials.
Reuse
Very often we throw away items that still could be used. For example, we sometimes throw away clothes when they no longer fit us, or we buy some new furniture and throw away something that could be repaired. Other people could make use of these items. We need to change our bad habits.
Recycling
By recycling, we can make something new from something old. This saves natural resources(资源). It also helps to offer jobs.
Rebuying
If we buy recycled goods, we help to save resources and avoid waste. The money we spend also supports the recycling process. Remember the Four Rs!
Of course, there are many other ways to improve our environment, we know. Let’s try them.![]()
