New Year's Day is the time for people to say goodbye to the past and celebrate a new start. People in most countries celebrate this special day on Jan. 1st of the Gregorian calendar (公历) .And they celebrate it in many different ways.

In the US,every year as the clock nears midnight on Dec. 31st,people in Times Square,New York,watch the famous New Year's Eve Ball go down from the top of the flagpole (旗杆) . While in the UK,people have a tradition of singing an old song called Auld Lang Syne at midnight. The song is a Scottish poem written by Robert Bums in 1788. Auld Lang Syne is Scottish for good old times. People sing it to show their appreciation (感激) for the old and new years. While singing the song,people also dance together.

However,in China,New Year's Day is not a very big moment compared to the Spring Festival,yet people still do something special.
