4My father was born in__a__village.

5He left his home at 730.

He ________ ________ his home at 730.

1Did solve

2false

3When did die

4Where was born

5didn't leave

Did, solve

When did, die

Where was born

Emily was an eighth grader. To pass her Civics course (公民课程), she had to do some volunteer service in a nursing home for a week.

One Monday, Emily went to the nursing home after school. When she arrived, she was told she would spend an hour every weekday with an elderly lady, Mrs. Blair. She was then led into a room, where an old lady in a flowery dress was sitting on a sofa. Emily stood nervously in front of the lady. She cleared her throat and said, “Good afternoon. I’m Emily.” “Good afternoon, Emily. Take a seat, please.” Mrs. Blair replied. Then, silence filled the space. Emily wondered what to say. “Tell me about yourself, Emily,” Mrs. Blair said suddenly. “Well,” Emily started, “I am not good at talking with the elderly people. I love the performing arts. I’m here mainly because I have to volunteer here to get a good grade for my Civics class.”

Mrs. Blair didn’t seem to mind. “Many people especially teens, don’t seem to care about people like me. Now you are here and I’m going to change that about you. Ask me anything.” Emily thought for a moment, and finally decided, “What was your job?” “I was a Broadway star in the 1950s.” Mrs. Blair answered. “Cool! Can you tell me about it? My dream is to be a Broadway performer.” Emily said in excitement. Mrs. Blair smiled and showed her a bracelet (手链). “Look at the bracelet, Emily. Only the lead actress had the honor to wear the special bracelet. I was the lead in almost all of the plays, so I always wore the bracelet. Till this day, I still have it. ……”

Emily smiled along with Mrs. Blair and listened to the other stories, attentively. Days passed by quickly. Then came Friday. As she was leaving, Mrs. Blair handed a small box to Emily. Emily carefully opened the box and was surprised to see what was inside. “It’s the bracelet that you wore. Thank you!” Emily said with tears in her eyes. Mrs. Blair replied gently, “I believe you will stand on the stage of Broadway one day, wearing the bracelet.”

New high school students in the US have more to worry about than their test. Often, high school are up to 10 times larger than middle schools. Students become small fish in a very, very big pond.

In the past, American kids knew that high school would bring bullying from elder students. Young students felt lonely and confused.

Nowadays, things are improving. Schools are creating “teams” to make students feel welcome. A team is smaller, friendlier, and easier to become a part of than the school as a whole.

Teams are made up of a few students from each grade level. Teachers choose team leaders to act as role models. Within a team older students protect and advise the younger students, who will do the same for the later. The teams stay together for all four years of school. Some teams even create their own flags!

Students meet on campus before school starts at “orientation”(新生训练). At orientation, students get to know the members of their team. Orientation may go on for as long as one week. During orientation, experts guide students through “trust games”. In one popular game, a student is blindfolded(蒙起眼睛的) and led by a partner through some obstacles(障碍物). In scavenger-hunt(寻物) type games, students have to find out the interests and hobbies of their teammates. These activities help students to get close to each other. Students can go to their team members questions, problems and even friendship. This way, high school doesn’t seem quite so scary.

1High schools are up to 10 times larger than middle schools, aren’t they?

2How did young high school students feel in the past?

3What is a team made up of?

4How long may an orientation last?

5What is the aim of the activities at orientation?

6What activities do you expect to have in your future high school? Why? (please give at least two reasons)
