As teenagers, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize, or they can be small. You may just want to become one of the ten best students in your class.

Once you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream true?

Follow Your Heart by Australian writer Andrews tells us that making our dreams true is life’s biggest challenge (挑战).

In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is.

Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster because a big dream is, in fact, many small dreams.

You must also never give up your dream.

There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or it is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of thoughts stop you from getting your dream, the book says.

You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of watching TV will lead to better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book. As you get closer to your dream, it may change a little. This is good as you have the chance to learn more skills and find new interests.

1Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.

2Find out the sentences from the passage that stand for “the biggest difficulty comes from yourself”.

1该句中thoughts意为“想法”,stop sb. from doing sth.

“the biggest difficulty comes from yourself”意为“最大的困难来自于你自己”,文中说明这一句的为“You may think you are not very good at some school subjects, or it is impossible for you to become a writer. 你可能认为你在某些学校科目上不是很好,或者你不可能成为一名作家。”,故答案为“You may think you are not very good at some school subjects, or it is impossible for you to become a writer.”。

根据文中“The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is. Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster. 你必须做的第一件事就是记住你的梦想是什么。别让它离开你的心,一直告诉自己你想要什么。一步一步地做,你的梦想就会更快实现。”,可知要想实现梦想我们应该怎么做,故答案为The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is./ Don’t let it leave your heart./You must also never give up your dream

4根据文章最后一段主要讲述了实现梦想的道路上遇到的困难,所以首句“You need to decide what is the most important.你需要决定什么是你最重要的事情。”是这段的中心句。故答案为You need to decide what is the most important

5根据短文内容“Once you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream true? 一旦你找到一个梦想,你会怎么做?你有没有试过实现你的梦想?”等细节可知该短文主要讲述了每个人都有自己的梦想,更要努力实现自己的梦想,所以文章的题目可以是“使你的梦想成真Make Your Dream Come True”。 Make Your Dream Come True

China is a country with many colorful days and festivals. The Dragon Head Raising Day(Longtaitou) is one of them. This special day is on the second day of the second month in the Chinese lunar calendar. It stands for the start of spring and farming.

The dragon is important for Chinese people. We Chinese people call ourselves the “descendants (传人) of the dragon”. Therefore, people celebrate the Dragon Head Raising Day with many customs.

On the day in ancient times, people put ashes in the kitchen. This was to “lead the dragon into the house”. People believed that with the help of the dragon, they could have a good harvest(收成) in autumn.

Also, people eat special foods that day. The foods are usually named after dragons. For example, people eat “dragon whisker(细须)” noodles and dumplings called “dragon teeth”.

Today, many customs have faded away(消退). But one that has remained is the cutting of hair. It is said that a haircut during the first lunar month may bring bad luck to the uncles of the family—mainly mother's brothers. So many people have their hair cut on the Dragon Head Raising Day.

1What does the Dragon Head Raising stand for?

2What do we Chinese people call ourselves?

3Why did people in ancient times put ashes in the kitchen?

4What do people eat on that day?

5There are no customs left in China on that day now, are there?

Dear Dr. Green,

My relationship with my mother is worse and worse now. It seems she’s never tired of talking. She talks here and there, day and night. More seriously, I feel like we don’t have much in common. She doesn’t always understand what I’m trying to say. What should I do?

Yours,

Jim

Dear Jim,

I know how you feel. It’s not easy being your age. And it’s not easy being a mother, either.

It’s common for kids to have trouble talking with parents, and talkative mothers are not new to teenagers. But remember, she’s nagging (唠叨) you because she just wants what’s best for you. Talking is her way to show love and care. And she also wants to know more about you. After a day’s work, she’s tired, too. But she will never be tired of caring about you. Kids should learn to understand and care about parents.

In my opinion, it’s helpful to share school life with her. Then, you talk and she listens. Doing some housework together with her is another good way for you two to know each other better. And if possible, often tell her your feelings about the things around you. Always keep in mind: be polite and patient.

Yours,

Dr. Green

2In Jim’s eyes, his mother doesn’t always understand what he’s trying to say.

3Dr. Green thinks it’s common for kids to have trouble talking with their parents.

4In Dr. Green’s opinion, talking is a way for mothers to relax after a day’s work.

5Dr. Green explains three reasons for mom’s nagging and offers three suggestions.
