TikTok, also known as Douyin in China, is a media APP for creating and sharing short videos. Owned by ByteDance, the APP was started as Douyin in China in September, 2016 and introduced to the foreign countries as TikTok one year later. It is a leading short video platform ( 平台 ) in Asia, United States, and other parts of the world.

Thanks to its marketing, Douyin enjoys great popularity nowadays. For example, its marketing advertisements in 2018 Chinese Spring Festival Gala ( 春晚) alone brought an increase of 70 million daily active users.

On the other hand, the success of this APP is often tied to the celebrities, like comedian Jimmy Fallon who makes it a hit in United States. While in China, many stars encourage teenagers to use Douyin by using it first. But its success mainly lies in its style which aims at making each other laugh harmlessly instead of letting people down. This makes it stand out from other social APPs, like WeChat, Facebook or Twitter.
