Living in a shanty Town

　　Jorge is from Brazil．He is 14 years old．His family moved from the countryside to the city of Sao Paulo two years ago．Jorge has three sisters and two brothers．Jorge's decided to take his family to the city to have a better life．In the countryside, there was not enough land to farm and Jorge's family often did have enough food to eat．

　　When Jorge's family came to Sao Paulo, they could not find anywhere to live．So they moved to a place near the city where people live in roughly built homes．This area is called a shanty town．Unlike other towns, there is no running water, no schools, and the roads are bad．

　　Jorge's mother and two elder sisters go to work in the city every day．They work in a factory, making shoes．Jorge and the other children play football with friends on the rubbish dump(垃圾场)next to the shanty town．They do not go to school．Jorge will also be going to work at the factory next year．

　　Jorge says,“We came here to get a better life．My family now has enough money to give us food but I don't like living in the city．This place is not clean and I often get sick．I want to go back to the countryside．I also want to go back to school．”

　　Unfortunately, Jorge and his family will probably leave the shanty town．Every day, every hour, families just like Jorge's leave the countryside and come to a shanty town in the city in search of jobs and a way to escape their increasing poverty(日趋贫困)．Life in the city is hard and people are forced(强迫)to live in crowded and unsatisfactory(令人不满意的)conditions, yet compared(比较)to their life in the country, very few people ever return．
