High above the city, stood the statue (雕像) of the Happy Prince. He was covered all over with thin leaves of fine gold, for eyes he had two bright sapphires (蓝宝石), and a large red ruby (红宝石) on his clothes.

One day, a Swallow (燕子) arrived at the city and stayed between the feet of the Happy Prince. But just as he was putting his head under his wings a large drop of water fell on him. “What is the use of a statue if it cannot keep the rain off?” he said.
