There was once a”Cave of Fear" in a town. Some people got into the cave but nobody returned from there. When someone entered the cave, people outside always heard a cry of terror (恐惧) and a burst of laughter. They said that there must be a monster (怪兽) living in the cave.

One day,a young man decided to enter the cave and meet the monster. He asked some people to go with him,but everyone refused. So he had to go inside alone. Twenty minutes later,he arrived at the bottom of the cave. He stopped there and looked around. Suddenly he felt that something hit him on his back. He fell down and believed that he was about to die. He let out one last cry. Then he heard a burst of laughter. He thought that must be the monsters laughter.

However,he didn't see any monsters. He heard music and voices. He got clearer and saw a group of people. They shouted,"Surprise!" The man found himself right in the middle of a big party. The people at the party were those who had never returned to the town.

They explained to him that all was the idea of an old mayor of the town. That mayor had tried to do great things, but was always held back by the fears of the people around him. So the mayor invented the story of the monster to prove how limiting (限制性的) such an attitude was.
