Technology is everywhere. We see it any place we go and, in fact, almost all of us carry some piece of technology with us every time we leave the house. What I always forget, though, is just how useful and powerful technology can be when we want to help others.

There is not a single room in my house that does not have some electronic devices (设备)lying around in it. Whenever I am at home, I am almost always using at least one electronic device. If you walked into my living room on any given day, you would find that, first, I have the television on. At the same time, I usually have my laptop resting on my knee, or I will be using my mobile phone. Even when I’m not at home I am always using my phone, and at work or in cafés, I sit down and connect to the local wireless network on my laptop.

I must say that I waste a lot of time on the computer and the time I spend on it could be much better spent if I were to take up a little online volunteering.

The technology we carry about everywhere can have a great power to do good for the world and to help others and recently I discovered just how much online volunteering there is to do in the world. From using your language skills to do translations, to developing and managing projects and helping with IT work, there is so much that so many people can do to help people in their own countries and across the world. The United Nations, in fact, has a huge page with “Volunteers Recruited” on its website.

This work can support the poor and help charities who cannot pay for staff. Many organizations only require you to work an hour a week-some even less. And the support provided by online volunteers can really help make a difference to those in need.

Do you want to know how and why a fall leaf changes color? We first have to understand what leaves are and what they do.

Leaves are the world's food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots and take CO2 from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2 into glucose(葡萄糖), a kind of sugar. Plants use it as food for energy and growing.

A chemical called “chlorophyll” in the leaves gives plants their green color. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees “know” to begin getting ready for winter.

During winter, there is not enough sunlight or water. Trees rest during this time and live on the food they store during the summer. They begin to shut down their food?making factories. As the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves.

The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, like maples(枫树), sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn the glucose in the leaves into a red color. And we can enjoy the beautiful red leaves during autumn.

In England, people often talk about the weather because they can have four seasons in one day. In the morning it is warm, just like in spring. An hour later, black clouds come out, and then it begins to rain and gets a little cold. In the afternoon the sky may be clear, and the sun may begin to shine. It may be just like a day in summer.

You can also have summer in winter, or have winter in summer. So in winter you can sometimes swim, and in summer you can sometimes wear warm clothes. When you go to England, you will see some Englishmen take an umbrella or a raincoat with them on a sunny morning. But you'd better not laugh at them. If you don't take an umbrella or a raincoat in the morning, maybe later you'll have to walk in the rain. People often say that in England you can have four seasons in one day.
