David Moore taught science at the City School. He needed some books, so he bought them. He left the books in his car in a quiet street. Then he went to buy some other things. At about six o’clock he came back to the car. One window was open and the books were not there! David had to drive to Fry Road.
That night he wrote a letter to a newspaper. The next day he went to the police station. On Friday people read this in the newspaper:
“Book: Do you have any old books? I buy old and modern books. Open all day on Saturday. David Moore, 26 Fry road.”
David stayed at home on Saturday. His first visitor came at eight o’clock. David took him to the kitchen. At half past nine another man arrived. He had a bag with him.
“Mr. Moore?” the man asked.
“That’s right,” David said. “Can I help you?”
“I’ve got some good books. You buy books, don’t you?”
“Yes, bring them in. I’ll have a look at them.”
Soon the books were on the table. “Come in now,” David called, “and bring the list.”
A policeman came into the room from David’s kitchen. They were just the same. “Come with me, sir,” the policeman said to the man.

Computers are very important to modern life. Many people think that in the future computers will be used a lot in everyday’s life. It is thought that we won’t have to go shopping because we will be able to get most things which are sold in shops on the Internet. There will be fewer books because we will be able to get all texts from computers. The Internet will be used to play games, see films and buy food. Most telephone calls will be made by computers, too.
Some people are glad about these new ways of shopping and communicating(交际). Others do not think that computers will replace(代替) our old ways.
Let’s take books for example. Some people think that one day we won’t read books made of paper. Instead, we will buy and read books using computers. We will read texts on small pocket computers. The computers will keep many different books in them at the same time. We won’t need to turn lots of pages and paper will be saved. Computerized books will be used more and more.
Is Internet shopping such a pleasure as going to the shop? Many people say it is not. It is a pleasure to go into shops and look at things you want to buy. It is also unlikely(不大可能) that many people will want to read large texts on our computers. Because paper books will perhaps be more friendly. Maybe computers won’t change these two habits(习惯).

E–book is short for electronic(电子) book. It is usually read on personal computers. Some mobile phones can also be used to read e–books.
Earlier e–books were written for a certain group of readers and were about only a few subjects. With the development of the Internet, knowledge and answers to a lot of questions mainly come from e–books. This is why the e–book business is increasing quickly.
E–books have many advantages. First, they save time. We don’t need to go a bookstore to buy books. Besides, we can find the topic we want to know about on the Internet, and then we can quickly get many e–books on similar topics. Second, e–books save money. Some e–books cost us little money, and there are millions of e–books on the Internet that we can get for free. Third, more trees are saved because e–books don’t need to be printed on paper. Fourth, e–books make reading more convenient. You can carry a whole library of hundreds of books with you in a small computer or any e–book reader(阅读器), without worrying about their weight.
But e–books have certain disadvantages. They need a personal computer or an e–book reader, and the information can be lost if its file format(文件格式) is not supported(支持) or changed in the reader’s computer.
However, e–books provide us with a new way of reading. That is good.

Some people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man, when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know?

Television has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment. Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbooks (平装本), which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example, is always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or the theater, and you can keep a book for ever and read it many times.

Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have a good dictionary. A good encyclopedia (百科全书), though expensive, is useful, too, because you can find information on any subject. Besides, you can have such books as history books, science textbooks, cookbooks, and collections of stories and poems. Then from time to time you can take a book of poems off your shelves and read the thoughts and feelings of your favorite poets.

A.Fewer and fewer people will buy books.

B.A good dictionary should be kept in every home.

C.Books with hard covers sell better than paperbooks.

D.More people like TV programs about famous men.

2.What does the sentence “Television has not killed reading, however.” underlined in the second paragraph suggest?

A.People only need reading, though.

B.Reading is still necessary today.

C.Reading is more fun than television.

D.Watching television doesn’t help reading.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A.TV programs are a chief provider of knowledge.

B.Cinemas are the best choice in getting information.

C.Reading is cheap way of learning and having fun.

D.Newspapers are an expensive way to enjoy oneself.
