About ten years ago when I was a student at college, I spent my summer holidays working at a museum. Life was ______ for me then. Dad had lost his job and Mum was sick in bed. I was wondering ______ I would be able to go on with my study the next term.

One day while I was working. I saw an old man come in with a little girl in a wheelchair. As I looked closer at this girl, I found that she had no arms or legs. She was ______ a little white dress and she also had a hat on.

As the old man pushed the wheelchair up to me, I was busy with my work. I turned my ______ toward the girl and gave her a wink (眨眼). When I took the money from her grandfather, I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the largest, prettiest smile I had ______ seen.

Suddenly her handicap (生理缺陷) was covered and all I saw was this______ girl, whose smile almost gave me a better understanding of what life is all about. She helped me from a poor, ______ college student and brought me into her ______ of smiles, love and warmth.

My name is Linda. I was cute, active and happy—until that day when I was two years old. I had a bad fall and hurt one of my eyes. The doctor said that if the eye was taken out, my face would look worse, so my blind eye lives on with me.

People often ask me uncomfortable questions about my eye or even play jokes on me. When the kids played games, I was always the “bad guy”. Everyone looked down on me. Yet every time mom noticed I was unhappy, she would say to me, “Hold your head up high and face the world.” It helped me move on in life.

As a child, I thought mom meant: Be careful or you will fall down or knock into something because you are not looking. As a teenager I always looked down to hide my shame, but I found that people liked me when I held my head up high. In high school I was even made monitor. All I really wanted was to look like everyone else. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mom and she would look at me with loving eyes and say, “Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the love that is inside.”

Mom’s love gave me confidence. Finally I was able to look people in the eye. I learned not only to appreciate (欣赏) myself but to have deep love for others.
