Dear Mr. Hunt,

My problem is that I can’t get on with my family. Relations between my parents have become difficult. They fight a lot, and I really don’t like it. It’s the only (A) c________ they have. I don’t know if I should say anything to them about this. When they argue, it’s like a big, black cloud (B) hanging over our home. Also, my elder brother is not very nice to me. He always refuses to let me watch my favorite TV show. Instead he watches whatever he wants until late at night. (C) I don’t think this is fair. At home I always feel lonely and nervous. Is that normal?

1根据短文开头“My problem is that I can’t get on with my family.” He can’t get on with his family.

2根据短文最后“At home I always feel lonely and nervous.” He always feels lonely and nervous.

3根据语境“They fight a lot, and I really don’t like it. It’s the only (A) c________ they have.” “他们总是吵架,我真的很不喜欢。这是他们唯一的……”,结合单词的首字母可知,这里考查communication,意为“交流”。故答案为communication

4根据语境“When they argue, it’s like a big, black cloud (B) hanging over our home.” “当他们争吵的时候,就像一块大的黑云……我们的家”。hanging over的意思应该是“笼罩”。故答案为:笼罩。

5原文处使用了否定前移,将宾语从句中的否定形式前移到了谓语动词think。同义句可以将fair变为反义词unfair“不公平的”,主句谓语动词think用肯定的形式。故答案为I think this is unfair.

In this age of Facebook and Twitter, we are all supposed to have hundreds of friends. But in fact most of us have just two close friends — down from an average(平均水平) of three 25 years ago, a study says.

Researchers (研究者) say there is no need to worry about that. Instead, they say that while some of us may be getting “more vulnerable (脆弱的)”, many are becoming better at deciding who is their close friend.

The result seems unexpected. Because a lot of young people are trying to make as many “friends” as possible on the Internet.

According to Facebook, the average user usually has 130 friends, but many of these are people who are known by accident or people the user will never meet in real life.

But the researcher, Mr. Brashears says, although the circle(圈子) of friends is getting smaller, which may make us more vulnerable, we’re not as “lonely” as the result shows.

For his study, Mr. Brashears did a survey in more than 2,000 adults aged 18 and older. He found that, modern discussion networks have been smaller in size. It is the same as other researchers’ findings, but few people have become lonelier.

Researchers asked people to list the names of people they had discussed important matters with over the past six months. About 48% of them listed one name, 18 % listed two, and about 29% listed more than two names for these close friends.

On average, one person had 2.03 close friends. And just over 4% of them didn’t list any names.
