My dad was the rock of my life. As I was growing up I always knew he was there. He was the type to wait for someone to start a conversation; then he would join in and listen carefully.

I remember and miss those conversations so much. He was always trying to protect my whole family; sometimes I think we mistook him.

My dad began to work in a bank at the age of 23. When he was in his later fifties, he took early retirement. I never thought he would even think of doing that, but he said he wanted a change to start a new company of his own. I understood that. My dad was always working. He hardly ever rested or took a break. He moved to Atlanta from New York where he planned to start a new company. Eight months later I visited my dad for the first time in his new home; he had changed his address, and my wife and I found him in his new home. We found a small house that looked more like a shack(窝棚) on the beach. This was Dad's new house? At the door was a man whose face lit up when he saw us. It was dad... DAD? It couldn't be! This man had grey hair. Where was my Porsche(保时捷)? In other words, where was my dad I had grown up with?
