Shanghai started a new garbage-sorting (垃圾分类)program in July this year. People are always asking“which is the right bin(垃圾箱) for my garbage?" They need to put different kinds of garbage into different bins. Other cities in China will do the same soon.

Why is garbage sorting a big problem?

It's because there is too much garbage these days. It's bad for our soil, air and water. Actually, we can make use of some garbage again. And first, we need to sort our garbage. For example, if you put an battery(电池) into the“harmful waste(有害垃圾)”bin, people can use it to make new batteries. But if you don't, the battery will be somewhere else. It will be bad for the environment. Many people may not know how to sort it in a right way. China's tech companies are working hard to solve this problem. For example, if you want to know which bin your milk box should go in, you can just open a mini app(小程序) in WeChat or Ali pay and look for“wet wipes". The app will give you the answer right away. Maybe you can just take a photo of the garbage and then you will know which bin you should put it into.

The future of garbage-sorting looks good. But it's not the best way. The best thing we can do is to make less garbage in the first place.

Most of us love snacks. When I first came to Beijing, I was surprised(惊讶)to see that some of my favorite snack brands(品牌)from back home were also in China. Many of them also have new flavors(口味)for Chinese tastes.

For example, the Dove brand of chocolate has a green tea -flavor. The Lay's brand of potato chips has a cucumber(黄瓜)flavor. There are also shrimp-flavored(虾味的)snacks. And of course, fast food restaurants like KFC also have their own Chinese food, such as youtiao and porridge(粥).

Some of these "Chinese" flavors are quite good. The green tea-flavored snacks tasted a bit odd (奇怪的) to me at first, but I get used to(习惯)the taste now. As for the shrimp-flavored snacks …well, I think I'll give those ones to someone else now.
