Last October, I went on vacation to Thailand for two weeks with my girlfriend, Mia. The vacation began well. We spent two days in Bangkok and saw the Floating Market and the Royal Palace. But things went wrong when we left Bangkok. I wanted to stay in hostels, which were basic but clean, but Mia said they were too uncomfortable. So we stayed in very expensive hotels. I wanted to experience the local atmosphere, but Mia just wanted to go shopping. I thought I knew Mia well, but you don’t know a person until you travel with him or her. It was awful! We argued about everything.

For our last four days we went to Ko Chang, a beautiful island. It was like being in paradise. The weather was beautiful and the beaches were wonderful, but we just sunbathed without speaking. We spent our last night back in Bangkok, and we met some travelers from Australia. They were really friendly, and Mia started flirting with one of the boys. That was the end.

When we arrived at O’Hare International Airport the next day, we decided to break up. I took hundreds of photos, but when I got home I didn’t show them to anyone.

Last spring, my best friend Isabelle and I booked a vacation in Costa Rica（哥斯达黎加）. We rented a small house for a week with a fantastic view of the ocean. At the last minute, another friend, Linda, asked if she could come, too. We felt sorry for her because she had problems with her boyfriend, so we said yes.

Costa Rica was magical and the weather was perfect, but the vacation was a disaster for one simple reason: Linda was so cheap! The worst thing was that although Isabelle and I paid for the house, Linda never once bought us a coffee or a snack.

【题目】 Maybe you know floods, droughts, earthquakes, sandstorms and so on. But have you ever heard of typhoons(台风)?

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates(蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then, cooler air rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles, and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 meters a second, a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts, One is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast.

The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where the strongest winds and hardest rains are.

Typhoons are very dangerous. In 2004, Typhoon Yunna killed 164 people in Zhejiang, and 24 people were missing. In May 2006, Typhoon Pearl hit Guangdong and Fujian, and thousands of houses were damaged(毁坏).

What to do when a typhoon hits:

Stay inside, Close all the windows and stay away from them.

Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bikes!

Listen to the radio or TV for important information.

If you’re told to go to a safer place, do so right away.
