【题目】In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, for they believe that it is helpful for social progress and richness, others say that competition is bad; and that it sets one person against another and leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief(看法) that their self – worth came from how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, performing well and winning are often life-and-death matters. Sadly, they forget to develop many other human qualities.

However, while some seem to wish to succeed very much, others think quite the opposite. They, especially young people have suffered from competitive stress from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often find that they choose to fail. They seem to choose failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” In fact, they are worried that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean they were worth nothing.

Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove their self – worth. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self – worth come from how well one performs in comparison(比较) with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. I suggest that they can discover a new meaning in competition only when such worries and fear begin to disappear.

They think one can 8 his self-worth only by performing better than others in competition.

Both are 9 of not being valued.

Writer’s 10 to children

Find the new meaning of competition as such worries and fear begin to disappear.

【题目】If you think it is cold where you are at the moment, then a visit to the Russian village of Oymyakon might just change your mind. The small village is in the heart of Siberia(西伯利亚). The name Oymyakon means “non-freezing water” because of a nearby hot spring, but it is indeed the coldest inhabited(有人居住的) place on the earth.

Oymyakon sits just a few hundred miles from the Arctic Circle(北极圈). The average(平均) temperature remains below 50°C in winter and the lowest temperature there was 67.7°C. This is the lowest recorded temperature in the Northern Hemisphere(北半球). Oymyakon is white in winter, since everything is frozen and covered with thick snow. But it’s also dark—the length of daytime is only three hours.

Because of the weather, people’s life there is inconvenient(不方便的), yet simple and traditional. Most homes still burn coal and wood for heat. When people go outside, they have to wear fur coats to stay warm. They can’t wear glasses, or the glasses will freeze to their face. There are few modern conveniences for them to enjoy. People don’t use mobile phones, because the batteries(电池) cannot work in such low temperatures. Cars can only be placed in heated garages. The ones left outside must keep running, or they won’t restart.

1Which country does the village Oymyakon lie in?

2How far is it from Oymyakon to the Arctic Circle?
